Just finished _Cahokia Jazz_ by Francis Spufford, an alternative-history detective story in which the [Cahokia culture](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cahokia_people) endured into the 1920s and was strong enough to resist the westward tide of Manifest Destiny for many years before becoming part of the United States. I caught two references to nonexistent books: _Jesuit Relations, Vol. XXVII, North American Missions III (Cahokia)_, author unknown but quoting an entry by Sebastian Villanova, S.J. (a Jesuit priest) from 1608, and _Decision Book of the Huma Anopoli Tanaha, Vol. XVIII_, author also unknown, a summary of Cahokia government action at the time of the American Civil War. ---

Just finished Yangsze Choo’s pretty good supernatural mystery/romance _The Fox Wife_, set in Manchuria in 1908. One of the characters, Kuro, is said to have published a “forlorn and wistful collection” of ghost stories not long before. We’re never told its title. ---
