There was a movie about the space race to the moon and the premise was that the U.S. could send the guy but didn’t have the technology to get him back.  
The idea was the he would stay there for a couple of months until the technology was ready; this was how they could beat the Soviet Union.  
Finally he gets there and in the last scene he finds a Soviet spacecraft and the bodies of 3 cosmonauts.

What’s the movie?
