Mr. Karenow and I are going out to dinner and then will rent a movie tonight, as there’s nothing out that we can agree on seeing or feel passionate about wanting to see. Our movie tastes aren’t terribly compatible; he’s not a big movie buff and I - well, am. I will see pretty much anything except for stupid comedies or formulaic romances. He has stated he is interested in a comedy or a “quirky” movie. By that he means movies like Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, etc. We thought maybe Napoleon Dynamite. But the reviews are mixed on that and I’m not sure if I will like it. I like to see everything and my choice in the movie theatre would have been probably Bride and Prejudice… he says no to that because "it’s based on “Jane Austen”. Similar objections to a psychological thriller (“I don’t like scary movies”) and a political drama (“Not in the mood”). So renting/viewing movies with the hubby is always contentious and infuriating because he won’t expand his horizons at all (except for movies like LOTR and Harry Potter, because he loved the books). He is very intelligent but not a movie guy. With that said, can any one recommend a good movie for us to rent tonight? A comedy or black comedy would be best. It doesn’t have to be recently released. Sort of, “IF YOU LIKED ROYAL TENENBAUMS, RUSHMORE, and HEATHERS, you’ll like…” thanks so much! I don’t want to get pissed off in Blockbuster. Karen ---

Definitely _Eternal Sunshine_. I’d also recommend _De Lovely_ (it’s a bio of Cole Porter but the story style is very quirky), _The Big Lebowski_ (or anything else by the Coen Brothers: \*Oh Brother Where Art Thou?, Raising Arizona, etc.), _Bottle Rocket_ (a full sibling of Tenenbaums), _Kill Bill volumes 1 & 2_, _Adaptation_, _Being John Malkovich_, _Confessions of a Dangerous Mind_, _Punch Drunk Love_ (it **is** Adam Sandler but it’s **not** Happy Gilmore Adam Sandler- he didn’t write this one), and any of the Chris Guest movies (_Best of Show, Waiting for Guffman, Mighty Wind, Spinal Tap_). There’s also new Rutles documentary (Can’t Buy Me Lunch) out as well but it’s gotten mixed reviews. ---

According to your specifications, I’d say _Ghost World_ or _The Big Lebowski_. If he’s seen those, maybe something more obscure, like _Clockwatchers_ or _After Hours_ or _Withnail & I_. ---

Dr. Strangelove possible the funniest movie ever made and IMHO the greatest black comedy filmed.
