I seem to be having a problem with IE. After a web page loads, especially if it is a long page like some of the SDMB threads, the scrolling function is very slow and not at all smooth. If i place the mouse cursor on the actual scroll bar on the right, and try to pull the bar up and down with the mouse, it moves slowly and the page flickers. If i just put the mouse cursor on the up or down arrow at the top or bottom of the scroll bar, and click, scrolling is veeeerrrrry sloooooow. And it is also slow and rather erratic when i use the scrolling wheel on the mouse. The shorter the page, the less noticeable this problem is, but it is really irritating on the long pages. This only happens on IE, not on Netscape or on any other programs (e.g., MS Word) that use a scroll bar. I tried reinstalling IE, but it doesn’t seem to have helped. Anyone got any suggestions? You can try turning off smooth scrolling. Got to Tools \> Internet Options \> Advanced Tab. Scroll down the list a bit and uncheck “Use smooth scrolling”. Then click OK. ---

Thanks for the advice **Q.E.D.**. I tried it and it doesn’t seem to make any difference. It’s not just the smoothness either; there seems to be a sort of time lag between my clicking to scroll and the actual scrolling. ---

Does there seem to be excessive hard drive activity? Is this problem relatively new, or has it been going on for a while? What OS are you running under? Anything new been installed? ---

And while you’re getting your system info for us, start up I.E., click on _Tools | Internet Options_, and then: 1.) Click on “Delete Cookies”; 2.) Click on “Delete Files” (make sure you also choose “Delete all offline content”) This will clear your cache for you; if you’ve set your cache limit pretty high, this might help speed things up. ---

Also, some Googling has suggested checking for background scumware using Adaware or Spybot. On at least one forum, someone said this cleared up a similar problem for them. If not, according to others, you might need to _uninstall_, then reinstall IE. IERadicator will do that up to Win 2k. ---

Anything new been installed? \*\* In order, the answers are: No New; only the last day or so Windows ME Not as far as i know I used Spybot and AdAware today, and while they found a few of the usual small things, there didn’t seem to be anything unusual, and i got rid everything that these programs found. **Skip** , i must have already cleared my cache a dozen times trying to work this out. I might need to take **Q.E.D.**'s suggestion and uninstall then reinstall. Thanks for your suggestions. I’ll let you know tomorrow what happens. ---

And just in case: if you’ve downloaded and installed IE add-ons (“browser enhancements”) from third-party companies (such as [HotBar](http://hotbar.com/site/abouthotbar/whatis.htm)), you’ll want to uninstall those. These add-on programs are largely memory-sucking hell beasts (:eek: ) that you’d do much better without. ---

Well, i used IEradicator to get rid of IE, and i then reinstalled the browser from scratch. It seems to have done the trick. Thanks again for all your help. ---

Wait a moment. Now i have another problem. Some of my folders are set up in Image Preview mode, so i can easily view my digital photos. as to your OP you might want to check if you’re using custom style sheets (tools/options/accessibility). that might slow down some comps. ---

Try: Start \> Run… [type:] _regsvr32 mydocs.dll_ Reboot Retry the steps to recreate the folder on the desktop if necessary. ---

And i forgot to mention, **Skip** , regarding your suggested fix for the Image Preview problem, that there is also no Tweak UI icon in my Control Panel, and i don’t recall ever seeing one before either. It seems that gremlins have been stealing things from my computer. 🙂 ---

One quick suggestion before I go looking elsewhere, but did you go to _Folder Options | View_ and make sure that “Show My Documents on Desktop” is set to “On”? As for Tweak UI: you can download that from Microsoft’s [here.](http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp) ---
