Last month I started something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time: guitar lessons. The first few lessons I used an old acoustic guitar that was given to me by my best friend to get me started. Shortly after my lessons started though, I decided I’d be better off with an electric guitar. So I bought an inexpensive but nice purple and white Squier Strat. The first time I take my new guitar to my lesson, my instructor informs me that I have to name it. Last week I came up with a funny name, but neither of us could remember what it was, so apparently it “wasn’t the right name” according to my instructor. So, any suggestions? I’m not sure if my guitar is male or female yet, so names for either gender will be considered. Of course I’m hoping it’s a male. I’ve spent quite a bit of time with my hands all over it. 😉 [sub]wondering if I can EVER stay on topic…[/sub] ---

Name it **Quasi** because it resembles a Fender (and Squire is made by Fender), but it’s not a “real” Fender. I’ve been looking at a Squire Telecaster. There was a big “up to 80% off sale” at Mars Music, but it wasn’t on sale so I didn’t get it. My best **fiend** sold me his Fender Tele for $400 many years ago. It had a “vintage white” (sort of a pale yellow) finish with a rosewood fretboard – Like Roy Buchannan’s. A few years ago my **fiend** wanted to buy his 1980s-vintage American-made Fender back. I sold it back to him for $400. Now I miss it and want to get another one. The problem is that Fender doesn’t offer that colour on their Telecasters and they cost over $800. Squire has the colour, but I want a Fender. I could get a custom paint job, but I don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars for a colour that _should_ be standard. I guess I’ll just have to wait for them to re-issue the colour or surf over to eBay. ---

You could always go for the Jimi Hendrix reference, and name it “Purple Haze”. And chances are, the guitar is male 🙂 ---

May I suggest a variation on a previous post, but more like an actual name: Purple Hayes. Of course, you could always stick to the classics and name it Hank. ---

If you’re not B.B. King (Lucille) or Willie Nelson (Trigger), naming your guitar is pretentious. Tell your teacher that. My two cents. ---

I’m a beginner, and I wouldn’t even think about putting myself on the same level as **anyone** who’s recorded anything professionally, let alone B.B. King. My instructor isn’t **requiring** me to name my guitar, although he did say that all the guitar players he knows have names for their guitars. Just out of curiosity, (and I’m asking a serious question here, don’t read any sarcasm into it) why do you consider naming a guitar pretentious? 😕 ---
