# Help!!! "Slante!" - definition please!!!

I am, I admit, a barbaric, ignorant rube, out of touch with the 21st century, etc.

Today I received an email message from a young woman and her ending salutation was “Slante!” I googled it and found thousands of hits, but I have no idea what it means! At first I thought it Gaelic, then Spanish, then French but I have come up empty…

…can someone please enlighten me so that I may come up with an equally hip closing in my reply?

She misspelled it. It should have been _Sláinte_, an Irish word which is translated loosely as “Cheers!”

Looks to me like a mis-spelling of “slainte” which is Gaelic for “health” - roughly pronounced “slawncha”.
