I suspect that of those 5% many feel that “someone oughtta stick it to McD’s!” There are always a few who delight in seeing a multi-gazillion dollar company pay out.
Also, the CNN poll (as usual) didn’t quite get the facts straight. The poll says:
“A U.S. judge ruled that McDonald’s isn’t responsible for an individual’s obesity.”
In fact, the accompanying story has the judge saying no such thing. The judge said the plaintiffs’ complaint was inadequate. They failed to allege that McDonald’s crap was more dangerous than what “reasonable consumer” should expect it to be. If they tidy up their complaint, it could potentially go to trial at which case, then someone would decide whether or not McD’s is responsible or not. This judge didn’t do that.
A nit pick, but CNN polls annoy me that way in a pet peeve kind of way.
The amended claim will likely get tossed out too because it’s going to be really hard to claim that the food is “more dangerous than what most people already expect it to be.”
