This has always kind of been a thing. I knew a guy in high school who found a way to drop an Eddie Murphy joke from “Raw” or “Delirious” into everything. Some people wouldn’t shut up with the Monty Python.

The Simpsons has become the overwhelming source of choice for these people now, though, because there is truly such an immense amount of it. It is the longest-running scripted primetime series in the history of the US TV market by a margin of ten years (and 13 over the next longest comedy - which to by admitted surprise is “Family Guy”) and has a level of cultural ubiquity no other modern show can claim. It used to be that if a guy wouldn’t stop stealing jokes from “Airplane!” that was okay because the next idiot stole all his jokes from Richard Pryor routines. Now both idiots, plus the next ten idiots, are stealing them from The Simpsons, with a little Family Guy now and then to mix it up. Giggity!

What’s odd about Spoons’s acquaintance is that they are presumably a grown adult. I would normally associate this sort of thing with teenaged boys.

Standard bar setup. We’re sitting on the same barstools, and watching the same TVs that we watch sports on, at other times. Sunday movie night started last fall, after the World Series–as I recall, it was a night when we had a choice of sports none of us cared for, NFL football, or a cheesy action movie on a channel we rarely watch. Half of us wanted the action picture, and half wanted the football game. So we put the movie on one TV, and football on the one next to it. We found that that channel shows a cheesy action movie every Sunday night, so the Sunday night movie has become a tradition among the regulars.

Some good suggestions here, folks. Thanks for them, and all the comments. We’ll see what happens this coming Sunday.
