Maybe it was “Getting Started” - an essay Bujold wrote for Writers of the Future Volume VIII (1992). I don’t have a copy handy but I also seem to remember Bujold saying that her early drafts of SoH were written as a Star Trek fan fiction.
God, I love these books. It’s time to read them all again.
She’s got Hugo Awards up the wazoo, for Barrayar, Mirror Dance (my favorite), The Vor Game, Paladin of Souls, and “The Mountains of Mourning”. That’s more than Heinlein! Buncha Nebulas, too.
Just bumping to say that anyone and everyone who ever suggested I read Bujold is a genius. I love her in a way that borders on the unhealthy.
