Help with place name origins

Originally, it was named List of non-US cities with a US namesake. I changed that to the present name because some people assumed namesake meant “with the same name”. Also some English person complained that “city” in England had a special meaning and most of the English towns did not qualify. (note: it has a special meaning in virtually all jurisdictions, but most people ignore the official meaning.) So I changed the “cities” to a very generic “place”.

I did suggest List of US places named for non-US places in the discussion. Not real happy with that, since it changes the emphasis of the list. Also will make it about 5 times longer once all possible additions are made. But too many people assume that’s what the list is, so I figure I may as well go with the flow.

But even that won’t stop people from adding entries that are wrong. Some people have no clue what’s been named for what and will assume that any two places with the same name goes on the list. There was one guy who kept adding Vancouver BC/WA and Ottawa ON/IL and a couple others, even though neither city was named for the other in those pairs. I think the guy was eventually “fired” as an editor (or whatever they do to unwanted editors).
Re: English names along the Great Northern line. According to Douglas Wick, who wrote a book on ND place names (see, for instance, this page on Tunbridge ND, GN officials named them to please their English investors.

Just want to give the results of the deletion attempts. The US-list result was keep but with the suggestion of a name change; the Canadian result was delete.

The discussion for the Canadian-list kept being extended, which is why it took so long. I’m thinking of protesting or challenging that result, but don’t know how to do it. I think I have a good case that the judge (or whatever they call them) ignored most of my arguments.

Currently, one guy who argued for delete on the Canadian-list is proposing the US-list for delete, too. Don’t worry about that; it’s against the rules and I’ll remove it in a few days if no one else does. However, I don’t think there’s anything stopping him from trying an AfD when that happens.
