Help With Pricing For Things I Am Planning To Sell (Collectibles, Electronics, Household, Clothing, Etc.)

I sold a ton of stuff on FB prior to our move. All my woodworking tools and equipment, LPs, gardening stuff. Free stuff will start a war, so I suggest putting at least a token price on something. If you really just want to give stuff away, put it on a table on the sidewalk. We got rid of a lot of stuff that way. People on FB will always try to pay less, so mark it up a bit higher than you normally would. I did have people show up and then try to offer less money, which really annoyed me. Oddly, it was always someone with an eastern European accent.

I’m never annoyed by this - although to be polite, the final price should be negotiated beforehand. But I just sold some old hats+hatboxes from my grandmother, and the person who bought them examined them closely, and then offered me slightly less due to some condition issues she’s noted (she seemed to know a lot more about the hats than I did). I agreed with her, and agreed with the new price.

I have had some folks demand that I deliver free stuff to them. That’s always good for a laugh.

And just recently, I sold a folding futon bed (like a futon couch, only smaller). Nice, all wood with a futon and cover. Priced low to sell. I had a bit of interest. First person wanted me to deliver it for free (no) and also wanted me to buy a new futon for it because she didn’t like the color (also no) 2nd person arrived, picked it up, handed me the cash, thankyouverymuch goodbye.

Which I always did via Messenger. They agreed and then showed up offering less.

Yes, this is irritating. Then they’re just wasting your time and theirs. If more of us said “no, goodbye”, then this method of weaseling would go down.

Just my thought on this sort of thing - I think you also have to determine the fundamental priority behind the sale. Is it to earn cash or to get rid of stuff?

After an initial period of frustration, the latter reasoning takes over and you end up on the curb throwing stuff at passing cars.

To paraphrase Obama, when they go low, you go high.

Customer: How much was it?
You: $20
Customer: I’ll give you $15 for it.
You: I’m sorry. Now it’s $30.

I once saw a guy do that when he was selling books at a community garage-sale type event.

I was browsing his stack of books on the sidewalk. He was reading. (dude likes his books!) Books were $2 for a hardcover, $1 for a paperback. A guy came and tried to bargain him down. The dude looked over his glasses and said “$5 each”. The guy said “WHAT? Your sign says $2!” Dude says quietly “$10 each” Then went back to his reading.
