One of my husband’s great nephews, his wife, and small child are taking a vacation for a week. None of my business, normally. However, they have a small inside-outside kitten, and they were planning on leaving her outside during this trip. No, nobody was going to feed or water her or look after her in any way. So my husband, who occasionally has a soft heart, brought home a tiny grey kitten, who is somewhere between 3 and 6 months of age. She’s tiny, and a bit dirty, and a bit stinky…but she’s adorable. She’s grey all over with a sheen of silver-blue, with yellow-green eyes, and mauve paw pads. She seems to be free of fleas (the nephew DID care enough to take her to a grooming place and get her bathed every month). She’s extremely affectionate, but I’m afraid that living life on the mean streets has made her pretty fierce. The adult cats are all outraged and disgusted by her, and she’s hissing at them. But she spent most of last evening snuggled up on either Bill or me, basking in the attention. The first thing we did was show her the dry kibble, the water, and the litter box. The second thing we did was open up two cans of Gooshy Food, which we use as a treat…or to distract the adult cats from the kitten. The kitten made short work of her half a can, and then crunched some kibble, and then came back in the living room for pettings. I don’t know if we’re going to keep her or not. On the one hand, this IS Bill’s great-great nephew’s kitten, supposedly. On the other hand, if they aren’t going to bother to make arrangements to look after her, she’s likely to end up dead in a year or two. And we already have three adult cats, who, as I mentioned, are absolutely horrified at the thought of sharing our affections with this baby. She snuggles. She presses her cheek against my face when I hold her. I know she’s doing it to mark me, but my heart just melts when she does this. And she tried to convince Bill that she needs to be held while she naps. Her face looks like an adult cat’s face, with a very sharp chin and a long nose. Perhaps she has a bit of wedgie head Siamese in her…she certainly talks enough. She’s going to break my heart, I just know it. ---

You’re doomed. I hate when the pet stores do their animal adoption days - all those adorable kitties in cages needing homes - _awwwwwwww!_ Although I can honestly remind myself that we have four adoptees already (2 canine, 2 feline) and if I bring another animal into the house, my spousal unit will go off the deep end. So, yeah, you’re doomed, because once you hold them, they work their evil magic. I trust an appropriate photo or 10 will follow soon. ---

I’ve been looking at kittens on TV and YouTube and ICanHasCheezburger, and commenting that I wanted a kitten. And Bill has been saying that we have ENOUGH cats already…and he’s the one who brought it home. I don’t know if I’ll ever figure out how to upload pics from my camera. Bill sends me pics, but my computer doesn’t want to download and save them. Maybe I’ll post from his computer in the near future. And I want to note, once again, that she spent most of her time on Bill. So she might be Bill’s kitty. Yes, we’re doomed. I REALLY don’t want to give her back to a family that thinks that it’s OK to leave a cat for a week. ---

That’s what drove me nuts when I was taking Keyser Soze to the vet regulalry- they had adoption kittens inside the cat side of the vet surgery (they has separate places for dogs and cats). So while I was waiting with angry cat I had to watch these other kittens and cats playing and wanting to take them home. They seemed different every time I went so I asked about them- they have a heap out the back and rotate them through so each cat/ kitten had an equal chance of being adopted. They would keep a cat for months before it was given the green dream- unless it was displaying aggressive or anti social behaviour. ---

Awww… kitties! I love kittens, buy Mr. Serenata is very allergic. I’d say see if you have any other relatives that would take the cat in. That way, the boy can still visit, but the cat would have a nurturing home. ---

There are some cats for whom just leaving them outside for a week works just fine. One time when I was young, we left for a trip to Grandma’s in the summer, and left plenty of food and water and left one of the upstairs windows open so the cats could go out on the porch roof if they wanted. Most of our cats would go up and down the trees next to the porch roof, but our newest cat at the time had a birth defect in her back legs, and we figured she’d just stay on the porch. Well, when we get home, we couldn’t find Spunky, and her food hadn’t been touched. That evening, comes a loud meow at the door, and there she is. Apparently she decided that it would be more fun to go camping, and nobody told _her_ that she couldn’t get down off the roof with only two functional legs. ---

_Lynn’s got a new caa-aattt!_ I must have been channeling you last night. I dreamt that a tiny cat appeared in my apartment that I must have had prior to the dream commencing, because I had a bag of dry cat food that was up under some other stuff (you know how dreams are). Apparently, during the time I’d forgottern her (him?), the kitty had manage to get to some of the food but couldn’t anymore. After I moved the stuff that was on top and kitteh was able to get to the rest of the food she came over and just held her head against my forearm, clearly showing love and appreciation for the food (even though it was my fault that she was in that situation in the first place). No, this does not mean you are to ship new kitty to me in Brooklyn, no, it does not. ---

Yes, it DOES get too cold on occasion, and it definitely gets too hot. Some cats are able to make it from one season to the next, but not all of them. Besides which, we have dogs (and other cats) running around loose. I doubt that she’d survive. AND we’ve got humans who like to torture cats. She just jumped onto my shoulder and is rubbing her face against my cheek, and purring. I am typing one handed, because she REFUSES to be put on the floor. ---

Apparently, I need to rig up some sort of fabric sling, like a baby sling. Because she DOES NOT want to be put down, unless there’s canned cat food involved. I finally put her on Bill, who was napping quite peacefully. WAS. Now she’s making happypaws on him instead of me. ---
