[/QUOTE] Not really. It comes from having watched people be hurt by thinking they had online ‘friends’ that turned out not to be so. The people who type may be real, but can you promise and guarantee me that every poster posts honestly? Do you really think you or I or anyone would be well-served to believe that everyone they deal with is honest? I take your word that you are happy about the posters you’ve met and it’s great that many people have met and found pleasant company but I haven’t had that experience and so I’m wary. And I’m not in the least insulted if people are wary of me when they haven’t met me. I think it’s wise to be cautious. ---

As far as the second part, thank you for the advice it is sound, but even in real life casual friends come and go. It is no big deal. 3 pages since last night. Whoa! I’m not going to bitch and moan. Nor will I curse. I will say this, **Quiddity** , you have annoyed a good many posters with your behavior. (Is that what you want, by the way?) I do not argue that you don’t have a right to post in threads. However I don’t like your hypocrisy. You tell everyone else not to assume and not to leap to conclusions yet you do it **all the time**. And you thread-shit which in my eyes is possibly one of the most annoying things around here. I’m asking you nicely - please tone it down. Cut it back. It’s gotten to the point where I flinch when I \*see you \*in a thread because whatever you are going to say is going to derail the whole thread. We’ll all be talking about something completely entertaining and then you come and take a big giant dump in the middle of the thread and all the other Dopers can’t help but point and stare and chatter about it. End of thread. Could you possibly consider cutting back the venom a bit? Because for all you say how nice you are, your posts come out rude, condescending, mean, and bitter. ---

QG, i rarely participate in Pit threads. Other than a post about the Spiderman DVD, this may be my only posting to the pit. I was surprised to see you being pitted because I have generally agreed with many of your non-Pit posts. So that’s why I read the whole thread with interest. I suspect you will disregard what I’m going to say, but I need to get it off my chest: You come across as a distinctly unpleasant person. You said you changed the way you dealt with people IRL. When this thread has died and your knickers are no longer in a twist, I hope you give a moment’s thought to how you are perceived. Best of luck to you. ---

I’ve never engaged with you personally on these boards, but like **'mika** , just seeing your name in a thread makes me cringe nowadays. Initially in the thread about late people I thought you were an unusally thoughtful and considerate person for thinking about how some people might have difficulty being on time because of certain issues, but then you took it to the other extreme and ended up sounding how you always seem to end up sounding - self-righteous and annoying. Your attempts to empathize with the “victim” are expressed with hostility and belligerence, which strikes me as somewhat ironic. Hey, if you don’t care that you’re pissing off a majority of posters here, then whatever. Carry on. Supply more material for the Pit, by all means. ---

I don’t think much of **Quiddity Glomfuster** , but this reminds me of the reaction against **Notthemama** (now **Duck Duck Goose** ). It’s not totally without foundation, but it’s mostly lame, cliquish bitching. And it has something to do with her gender. ---

I’ve seen posters whose posts I enjoy vilified here and posters whose posts don’t impress me praised to the skies. Not everybody shares the same opinion or likes the same thing so it’s a fool’s exercise to try to please everyone. I say what I say; if you like what you see, great. If not, well that’s life. If nobody at all ever liked me in person or liked what I wrote, yes, I’d think there’s reasons to re-examine my life. But I’ve been fortunate to earn the good opinion of people I like and admire IRL and even have some fans on SDMB, so I just put it down to the fact that people like different sorts of people and I’m not to everybody’s taste. [/QUOTE] So caution and wisdom equate to treating everyone on this message board as though they are entities which only exist when you are logged on? That seems pretty odd. I find it enjoyable to keep in mind the actual truth: I’m communicating with real people. My ability to get to know them is both enhanced and constrained by the medium, but I see no risk at all in assuming that everyone here is what they seem to be. I’ve seen a few “outings” of people who had misrepresented themselves. These have certainly had no adverse impact on me, and in fact provided some entertainment. I’m sure you don’t care, but I’ll offer my perception of you, since we’re in a Pit thread of which you’re the subject. Your posts seem to me as though your intention is to mildly annoy people. I don’t know why anyone would want to do that, but that’s how it appears to me. You are also remarkably weaselly when pressed. You also appear to have very little knowledge or expertise on anything, coupled with a constant need to expound. That’s an unfortunate combination. ---

[/QUOTE] Elsewhere, once, I was reminded rather vehemently that ‘the majority of posters’ don’t post in the Pit and a that lot of posters (possibly ‘the majority’) actively avoid it. I was counseled not to let the Pit experience colour my impression of SDMB overall. I have taken that advice and found it to be bang on.
