**Selena
Very Good performances in Excellent movies:
**Mi Familia
Blood and Wine
Out of Sight**
Very Good performances in movies that I think are good and get a bad rap:
**The Cell
Angel Eyes**
Sweet, likable performances in really horridly Bad movies:
**The Wedding Planner
Maid In Manhattan**
Haven’t seen and can’t comment:
Money Train
Jack
Anaconda
U-Turn
Enough
Bottom line for me: She’s been really good in some really good movies, but professionally, she’s completely frittered away the critical respect she got from Out of Sight, and I don’t see much upcoming that would get it back for her (though I am looking forward to Jersey Girl).
If it weren’t for all the unfortunate “J-Lo” and Puffy crap, she wouldn’t be so hated. She brought it on herself though. She’s become a joke and an object of scorn, and I’m finding it harder and harder to defend her. Still, Out of Sight, Selena, The Cell, Angel Eyes and Mi Familia will always be there to show, for those who can see, that she CAN act, and that, at one time, she used to pick interesting and difficult roles. Once upon a time. Sigh.
Preview is good for the soul. Why can’t I remember that?!
I also meant to say that the Casablanca thing is just a rumour, and it’s kind of funny seeing people foaming at the mouth over something that may not be true at all.
She IS involved in a remake of Shall We Dance? though. That’s a bit upsetting to me. I’m sure it’ll be sweet and competent, but boring.
The casting is bad enough but you know they’ll change the dialogue completely to “update it”
“The problems of three people don’t mean jack shit these days”
“If you don’t get on that plane you’ll regret it.”
“Why’d she have to come here?”
“Louis this looks like the begining of a friendship… right Ilsa?
Anything you say Rick I’m going with you”

Equipoise, I agree that Jennifer Lopez’ career up to this point hasn’t been a Hall of Shame. She’s an attractive woman and a capable if not a great actress. By everything I’ve heard, she’s a bitch from hell in real life, but that’s Ben Affleck’s problem (at least for now).
But in the past, Lopez has shown she knows her limits. She’s stuck with light comedies and action pictures. For that matter, her singing career has followed a parallel course; competent handling of the material in her range.
Personally, I don’t think Lopez has the acting ability to go beyond this. There are times now when she appears to be reaching. Now granted, Casablanca, for all its legendary status, is not Shakespeare and Lopez isn’t trying for Lady MacBeth. But I still think she’s going to be playing above her level and will fall.
Debating on starting a new thread about this, but decided to just put it here instead…Have you heard Ben bought J. Lo a $100,000 toilet?, which coincidently, is where they should flush that Casablanca remake idea down!
Equipoise, I’ve seen The Cell, and I’m sorry, but that movie sucked. It was a bad rip-off of Silence of the Lambs (itself a crappy movie, IMHO). The whole time I watched that movie, I kept thinking that Jello looked like a deer caught in headlights. That is, when I wasn’t thinking, “Hey! I know what music video they stole that scene from!”

Sorry to bump an old thread, someone linked it from the Pit.
I loved Jennifer Lopez. In Selena.
I was excited when she began garnering better roles and I heard she was going to put out an album.
I was sadly disappointed with everything else she’s done since then. Disappointed to the point where I cannot stand her, and truthfully, I do not even give fair consideration to projects she works on. I hear her name and I roll my eyes.
In unrelated J-Lo news, the twit bought a plantation in my hometown with Ben last month.
I should get something for my pain and suffering right?

Ok, I’ll take Ben off the poor girl’s hands. She’s just going to divorce him a month after the wedding anyway.

In general, I am a fan of the concept of the remake: I think that art is about reinterpretation ,and I am always willing to give someone the benefit of the doubt. In this case, however, I don’t think that Casablanca can really be remade unless it is radically reinvented. I’ve always thought that the critical thing about Casablanca is that it was filmed/released in the middle of WWII, not at the end. At the time, no one involved, from the writers to the actors to the audience, knew how the war was going to end–it was a period of incredible uncertainty and vunerablilty. That permeates the movie, and it simply can’t be recreated, regardless of the talent of the people involved.
