As for surreal, I’m still waiting for **Chumpsky** to check in and link rap and the neo-economic crypto-facist western industrial war machine. MOL, lets see if this helps There is no good music or bad music, see? It’s what we call _subjective_, which means nobody is right or wrong. As hard as you are trying to convince us that Kalib is so talented, someone else feels the same about Nelly. Different people interpret music, _differently!_. Now that we got that straight, let’s touch on something else. I’ve worked in the music industry, I write and produce tons of music, hip-hop included, and I know this little kernel of knowledge… The music industry has nothing to do about music! Yes you heard me correctly, music has surprising little to do with an artists success. Let me backpedal a bit, it _used_ to have something to do with it, but since MTV that’s not the case. These days a person can have very little skill and be successful, because anything can be done with sound editing. Image and looks are just as important these days, if not more. I’d rather be a good looking person with little talent, then an amazing singer who is butt ugly, because it will get you a lot further. I’ve taken rappers that couldn’t rhyme longer then 20 seconds, and splice it together so they sound 10 times faster then Busta, and you would never know. As far as lyrical content goes, people don’t really give a shit about politics, or insightful lyrics and messages, they just want to get their collective groove on. People these days don’t seem to be interested in anything that provokes thought, and that’s reflected in what’s popular today. Insipid formulaic movies, TV shows plots that are rehashed ad nauseum, and music that is uninspired and simplistic at best. I just haven’t figured out if they are making people like it, or if they are responding to the tastes of idiots. (an animated Adam Sandler movie comes to mind) The older hip hop had all the things you mentioned, then someone started talking about raping bitches and shooting cops up in the head, blah blah etc, and it sold. The record companies said, hmmmmmmm, lets find more of this stuff, people like it. Eventually it will get saturated, some label will take a chance on a new artist with a different style, and then the cycle will begin again. What was once fresh and new (umm say Nirvana), eventually becomes old and tired (say The Vines), it happens with everything, Michael Jordan, The Macarena, and the dancing baby included. One day you’ll be saying “what is this shit? I remember back in the day when we had good music like Slipknot and Lil Bow wow, this stuff nowadays isn’t even music, bah!” ---

For the record I’ll say that rap is about the vocals. You can have someone rhyme over almost any type of music, and as long as it has a decent beat, it will register as rap in your head. (some real strange ass rap but still). Take a hip hop beat and have someone sing on it, it becomes trip hop. ---

Okay, I’m not going over my stance on lyrical content and hip hop again. It’s been said a jillion times. But as for this “colored” business, no, it doesn’t mean I can’t be racist b/c I’m colored. What I’m saying is that I didn’t mean for the word to offend anyone as I also happen to be colored. I don’t usually refer to non-whites as _colored_, but I used it since whatshisface did. Kay? Lovely, let’s move on. About this name calling business. Being rude = name calling? Excellent, I didn’t know that. I’ll write this down. And thank you, **Coldfire**. **MOL** , sometimes if you dig a hole for yourself, it’s best to say “I’m sorry, can you please help me out of here”. From reading your posts, you seem to be very articulate and I think that you could contribute quite a lot to the SDMB. The best thing about this message board is that **everyones opinion** counts and no ones opinion is more or less important than any other. You can contribute a great deal and learn even more, if you can just accept this. We can’t agree on everything at all times. When did I ever say anyone’s opinion doesn’t count? I hate hop music. Sue me! Seriously, take me to court and get me for every penny I’ve got. I took issue with whatsherface saying the genre is based on beats and whatever. I’m not so sure about that b/c there are tons of hip hoppers who won’t even make anything unless the lyrics are about somthing (hint: read my quotes above). I honestly could not care less about what the hell is in your CD changer, but I’ve gotta say two things. One, I hate pop music. Two, not all hip hop is the same. Some of it relies on beats and rhythms, other types do not. Period. I’m done with this board. Have a nice day, kids (and adults). **MOL** may I suggest you use the “quote” feature more often when you talk about what another poster has written? You keep writing what other people say or mean, and when you rephrase it, the original meaning can get muddled. I have to say, **MOL** _did_ come across as arrogant and judgemental of others musical taste, which I agree with a few who’ve posted, is totally subjective. I’m not trying to pick on **MOL**. All right, all right. Let me try a more conciliatory tone here. This place can be a bit overwhelming and MOL could use a little more— what am I thinking of here?-- SDMB savvy? I still think the lyrics vs beats discussion would be a really good one if the participants were less defensive and, in my case, less reactionary. One thing I must reiterate to MOL: Don’t be such a freakin’ rude bitch. This altercation could have stayed out of the Pit if you hadn’t been so frickin’ rude and nasty-- not only to me, but to everyone who disagreed with her. Take time to _actually read what people are saying_. Stop jumping to ridiculous conclusions. The point that I think you were trying to make is a valid one. The problem, as I see it, is that you you were so focused on making your point that you didn’t pay attention to anything anyone said that seemed to counter your point. Stay here at the Dope MOL. This is a great place. You can expand your mind, have many laughs and **learn** something. ---
