For inquiring minds, a [Sodastream](https://www.sodastream.ca/en/index.php)is a way of carbonating things like water and juice to avoid all the sugar. However. My friends have one and despite the copious warnings in the manual carbonating vodka works… It was an excellent Christmas party. However. This got me to wondering what would NOT work. So Dopers, what nonconventional thing would be interesting to try out and what would be simply horrifying? My buddy Dave suggested Clamato/Tomato juice for fizzy Caesars/Bloody Marys. Other things I’ve considered: -drinkable yogourt -split pea soup- Mmm, fizzy pea soup… -whole milk -chicken broth This is why I don’t have one, nor do I recommend this as anything but an intellectual exercise for those of you that do have one, but hypothetically let me know what else would be fun in a carbonated form? ---

I feel like we had this thread a while back and someone said carbonated milk was pretty bad. Hydraulic Press Channel ‘carbonated’ some oddball stuff like fruit and meat. IIRC, some were awful, some they liked. ---

I wonder if gravy could be carbonated. Especially country gravy (the white stuff on chicken fried steaks and biscuits-n-gravy). I’m picturing it tasting the same but fizzing on the meal. ---

Your ideas all sound disgusting, so you should definitely give them a try. 🙂 Personally, I’d be more in line with your buddy and try various cocktails. Cold-brew coffee would also be delicious. On the practical side, the reason they say to use only water is that any drink with sugars or additives like starches or proteins that create foam will result in an unholy mess. I tried some diluted juice once, and it all looked good until I unscrewed the bottle and it erupted like a diet coke and mentos. ---

We’ve inadvertently carbonated several food groups with dry ice in a cooler on camping trips. Carbonated grapes are delicious. Carbonated hot dogs are not. ---

I like to put pre-mix drinks with syrup so I don’t have to lose some carbonation mixing in after. Mixes with artificial sweeteners tend to foam up more, though yesterday I pre-mixed some Torani syrup and it shot through up the top of the nozzle (over carbonation protection) as I was shooting the CO2. Which brings up the issue with viscous liquids. It could backflow into the nozzle and clog it. ---

I just got one. The instruction say not to carbonate anything except plain water in the machine. If you have even put soda flavoring in the water it says don’t use it in the machine. ---

Ok, gumbo and carbonated hot dogs made me laugh! And isn’t urine supposed to be fizzy anyway? 😃 Of course the instructions say not to use anything but water, that’s why we carbonated vodka as it’s mostly water. I’m aware of Heston Blumenthal, et al and would love to get to Fat Duck someday but I suspect the reservation list is still a tetch long. Imma only gonna carbonate Heavy Water when I can watch my Dr.No Lego figurine (I _wish_ I had James Bond Lego!) bob around in it for a bit… Now Ribena would be great! What about Ovaltine or hot chocolate? Too milky? Or hot sauce! ---
