I think the better argument for giving Lee a pass on treason is that he felt his loyalty was to his state and not the USA. But there is a significant difference between fighting to preserve slavery and fighting for the principles outlined in the declaration of independence. Where was the tyranny that Lee was fighting against? Sure Lee personally was brave and shrewd and had many admirable qualities but as a symbol he perpetuates “lost cause” ideology. A fictional retelling of the past that paints the South like they’re the fucking rebel alliance or Michael Fillion in Firefly. ---
