And I was there under the name “Titanic” which is the name I _always_ use at restaurants (if anyone wants the whole magilla on why, just let me know). And if anyone hadda shown up and axed the hostess for the “Titanic” party, they’da taken you right to me. ---

OK. 10th Grade algebra class ('75-'76). Two of classmates (Jerry Caesar and Tammy White) work part-time at TG&Y. For those of you not familiar with that chain, it was what used to be called a “dime store.” Sorta like a Kmart for small stuff. Before class started one day, they were chatting about their current manager who would be leaving soon. Jerry said that the new manager’s name was “Titanic.” Tammy said, “No way!” Jerry said, “I’m serious! His name is Titanic!” Well, time passed and the new manager did show up, but his name was most definitely not “Titanic,” although I don’t know what it was. OK, fast forward ten years. I’ve left the small town and have moved to the big town. I have a roommate, and \*we would go out to eat a lot. My roommate had a short one-syllable name that he didn’t particularly care for. Whenever he gave a name to a host(ess), he used the name “Rockwell.” He said, “It’s easy to understand, and no one ever asks how to spell it,” unlike his real name. Now, fast forward another ten years. I also have a short monosyllabic name, one that is easy to misunderstand, and often gets misunderstood. I’ve even been misunderstood has having the last name of “Chew,” to which I tell the host(ess), “Ah so! Name Chew! Would rike a seat!” During this time, my new boss at work has a name very similar to one of the TG&Y managers from 20 years earlier (the one that “Titanic” was supposed to replace). I hadn’t really thought about that in a long time, but one night at a restaurant, after having my name misunderstood yet again, it hit me. . . “Titanic!” Yeah. It’s easy for a host(ess) to understand. It’s easy for me to pick out over a loudspeaker, especially if there’s a lot of background noise. No one ever asks how to spell it–and there’s never another “Titanic” party waiting for a seat! How could it lose. I also found out that hosts/hostesses remember it after only one time. Every time since, it’s “Good evening Mr. Titanic. How many tonight?” So, that’s the name I’ve used ever since. Hosts/hostesses remember me, and frequently bump me up in the line since they know what a good customer I am.😃 \*We found out later that the wait staff at the restaurants we frequented thought we were gay, and were quite bewildered when they found he was engaged. ---

Yeah, your version was much better. . . And a helluva lot shorter. I’ll have to keep that in mind if anyone ever asks again. (BTW, the host staff members all know that’s not my real name.
