I have had a thought. Vance thinks people without children donā€™t care about what happens in the future. So Vance thinks people only care about what happens to their immediate kin. So that must be how Vance thinks himself. So if you know people defending Vance ā€“ point that out to them. And then ask them ā€“ if youā€™re not close kin to Vance, why do you think he gives a shit what happens to you? ---

I donā€™t pay too much attention to gaffes or gotcha journalism. People misspeak or have ill-considered words. This, however, was planned. Vance unveiled it to a think tank, repeated it on Tucker Carlson without caveats regarding the infertile, and recently double downed on the remarks. Itā€™s a miscalculation in my view. Vance was trying to make a premeditated clever point that (bonus!) was offensive. Thatā€™s not how Trump the demagogue does things. You can be thought provoking with a policy oriented audience, or you can be offensive while pandering to the mobā€™s worst instincts. Vanceā€™s remarks do neither: most of the mob likes their pets and knows the difficulties some women have with child bearing. The mob has higher standards. Furthermore unlike Trump, Vance doesnā€™t mouth off with a different message to the mob every day, so this single unflattering remark sticks in the publicā€™s mind. Sure Trump is offensive, but itā€™s always in the service of pandering to the mob, not making a weird point. Speaking as a human, denigrating families with adopted kids and step-children is the stuff of villainy. Cite: Brothers Grimm. ---
