Actually, I don’t believe Cliff was in Deep Rising, but I’m too lazy to check. You’re right though. I just mentioned them because it was interesting having a bunch of “THAT guys” all in one movie.
I also would like to mention Jeffrey Combs, at least as a former “THAT guy” (he may be too well known now though.)
He is superb as a weasel. When he shows up in a scene, he owns it. Especially as the Dad in “10 things I hate about you.”
Also, the Evil Phil Hartman guy is hot, even when he was butchering up his entire compound in ‘Desperado’. Paul Dooley has been my " No more ini food." until I found out he actually had a name. I just love “Breaking Away.”
This one may be too well known to the Teeming Millions[sup]TM[/sup], but the first person who came to mind for me was Wallace Shawn. I’m a huge Princess Bride fan, but not many of my friends are, so to most of the people I hang out with he’s a “that guy.”
I’m glad this thread was bumped, because I wanted to mention Don S. Davis. I remembered him the other day when I was watching A League of Their Own, in which he plays the coach. No, not the coach of the Rockford Peaches, that’s Tom Hanks. He’s the coach of the Racine Belles, the team the Peaches play against at the World Series.
He’s usually plays a cop or a military man, and his dozens of roles include the doctor in the Look Who’s Talking movie franchise, Major Briggs on Twin Peaks, and Scully’s dad on The X-Files.
Maybe for movies, but he’s too well known on TV to be a That Guy there. In addition to the two major supporting roles you gave above, he’s also spent seven years in the main credits of Stargate SG-1, one of the most successful genre shows of the last decade and only the second ever to make eight years.
My favorite “That Guy” has always been Vincent Schiavelli. The valet in Amadeus, the salesman on the Next Generation episode about the planet with the automated defense system, Lenny the cojoined twin on the “Humbug” episode of X-Files, and about a million other roles. His IMDB bio lists 93 movies and over 25 series TV appearences.
I wish I could remember how I first found out about this guy, but my “that guy” is Phil Hawn. The thing with him is, he’s usually just set dressing. Among his illustrious film roles: Uncredited Movie Theatre Patron, Uncredited College Professor, Uncredited Bartender, Uncredited Man in Courtroom, etc.
What is most interesting, however, is how prolific Phil is. In the three years from 1998 to 2000, he appeared in over sixty movies. He also does some video work and commercials, so I figure he’s the kind of person who knows people and can get these little roles pretty easily. I’d love to know the story.
I didn’t see him mentioned yet (unless I missed it) but Robert Davi is always THAT guy for me since I can never remember his name. I had to find him by searching for Profiler since I remembered seeing him in that.
Liev Schreiber. Who?!? He was in all three Scream flicks (Cotton), **The Sum Of All Fears ** (John Clark) **Jakob The Liar ** (the former boxer guy - I forget his name), **Kate & Leopold ** (Stuart), Sphere (Ted). He does a lot of voice over stuff on Discovery in America, and a lot of Shakespear in NYC
