Streep’s speech took her down a step in my estimation. It’s supposed to be a thank-you/acceptance speech, not a sermon on the modern political scene. One may argue that it’s her speech, a free country, and she can say what she wants. True. I can likewise pick my nose and flick boogers on the sidewalk in public, but that doesn’t mean it’s classy. ---

On the one hand, actors using award ceremonies as pulpits from which to voice political rants do annoy me. We’re not pointing the camera at you because we care how you vote; just say your thank-yous and fuck off. Even if I agree with your point, these speeches make me cringe. OTOH the OP is so stupid I just want to respond: Hey **koufax** - Meryl Streep is one of the most highly respected actors of her generation, one whose name has become virtually synonymous with excellence in her chosen profession of “play-acting” which, I think, qualifies her to be considered a “grown-up”. She has earned her reputation (and a huge amount of money) through sheer hard work and talent. You, conversely, are a nobody whining pathetically on an internet messageboard. I’m sure Ms. Streep will be bothered not a jot by your (or indeed my) views about her speech. ---
