Yes, it is satire.

Seriously, they inserted a female into the movie solely to be a whore. Did Peter Jackson decide to NOT include cooking? I’m with the OP here, better to have no women at all than have one portrayed in such a narrow-minded way.

Um…\<scratches head\> Did you _see_ the movie? She was the captain of the guard. Just because she’s attracted to someone doesn’t make her a “whore.”

But then again, I’m becoming more and more convinced as I get older that “whore” is the shorthand of a certain type of guy, used to refer to women who wouldn’t sleep with him if he were the last male mammal on earth (or Middle-Earth).

Just sayin’.

LOL. I love the outrage of people complaining about the lack of Diversity or how a love triangle was unbelievable, in a movie about hobbits or elves or whatever fantasy sperg nerd crap.

WOW JUST WOW THE LACK OF ELVISH DISABLED TRANSWYMYN OF COLOR IN THAT FILM ! I AM FORTHWITH OFFENDED !

> This supports what I asserted earlier. Men favor movies starred by men, while women are less gender-biased. If things are to change, it’s quite critical that men step outside of their comfort zones and embrace male and female presentations. Women do this, so there’s no reason guys can’t.

Women do this because they have been compelled to do this–it’s either that, or don’t go to movies much, since a majority of the protagonists out there across all genres (and characters in general, really) are male already. Why would male filmgoers want to change their behavior when everything the movies currently offer cater to their interests and sense of identification?

Well I think you go into any movie prepared to suspend a certain level of disbelief. In the case of fantasy films, you pretty much check all vestiges of disbelief at the door. So when an element of a fantasy movie calls in your disbelief from the lobby to weigh in, that’s a pretty seriously unfuckingbelievable event. An elf and a dwarf building mutual respect through watching each other in combat? Yeah, Ok I can buy that. But the whole interracial thing is just…no. It borders on bestiality if you’re an elf. ISTR the creation of dwarves was outside the scope and blessing of their creators–who had nothing to do with the creation of elves & humans. I mean, elf+dwarf is really messed up.

er … no … cap’t of the guard you say … well, I guess if she’s portrayed as the mighty leader of a fell people then maybe, just maybe, I overreacted a slight bit. But it still PROVES MY POINT, women should have more expanded rolls in movies. Peter Jackson is a prophet showing the young ladies of our world that they too can become greater than their foremothers.

Believability depends on the movie following the established laws in-universe. Yes, we know that in the real world, there is no magic or elves or talking spiders. But in this universe, there is. The disbelief comes from the film violating its own rules. In-universe, elves and dwarves do not so easily fraternize, and a taller than average dwarf has little to no chance of using just his looks to ensnare the heart of an immortal elf maiden.

And I don’t know what you’re talking about with the disabled transgender racial line as that is clearly not part of the complaints.

Thing is, there’s already a story in the Tolkien legendarium where a particularly wise Elf-woman extends the hand of friendship to a Dwarf who was certainly expecting anything but. When Gimli and the Fellowship arrive at Lothlorien, Celeborn is initially disquieted to hear that they have stirred up a Balrog in Moria and says that if he’d known this earlier he would have turned them back at the borders. Galadriel intervenes and says that he should be more compassionate when he talks about Gimli’s ancestral home, and that if they themselves were forced to flee Lothlorien they would surely dare any dangers for one more look at it centuries later even if it had become a dragon’s nest. She adds a few words to Gimli that economically convey how well she knew Moria in the age of its pomp, and that it really was just as wonderful as Gimli’s imagination makes it; and that, for him, is like looking into the eyes of a deadly enemy and seeing there compassion and understanding, and marks the beginning of an Age-of-Chivalry type courtly romance that’s none the less intense for being eternally chaste. He can’t be her lover but he can damned sure be her knight, and that’s how he acts for the rest of the book.

But eh, it turns out you don’t have to be the wisest and kindest Elf-queen of legend to achieve this; all you have to be is a feisty guard-captain who have the hots for an unattainable prince, and you’ll naturally turn out to be kind and sympathetic to the first good-looking dwarf who winds up in the cells.

Grandson-in-law I think? (I don’t have the family trees entirely committed to memory, for shame)

Galadriel took no part in the Kinslaying, and in some versions fought against it. Her mother was Teleri.
