Well, I will take a stab as a “newbie”. I love this board!
I found the SDMB almost a year ago, and can’t help going to it every day. While I have a low post count, I have read the board every day for the last 10 or 11 months. I personally like GD and the Pit.
I have followed the trials, travails, and just good stuff of the board for a while, such as the LBMB thing, all the sock puppets, the mark serling thing, the wacko guy in Cali that said he was a lawyer who wanted to sue the Reader, (can’t remember his handle), the Opal thing, when Wally died (may he rest in peace), when Manny became a mod, when Uncle Beer became a mod , the Chief’s reports from the ship , David B’s cynicism, Libs righteous indignation against Big Brother, Esprix (ask the gay guy) showing that being gay is cool, Tracer (for being with me on the gun thing), Eve the illustrious author, DrJ, who I wont take advice from until you graduate, hehe, and Satan, who as “Stan A” at LBMB was CLASSIC!
That is just a microcosm of what this board is, but it is what I like about it.
By no means are these all the people I like to read at the SDMB, just the ones that came to mind during the composing of this post.
You can see that the main reason I like the SDMB is the people who post. I have made contentious posts, and have been treated firmly but fairly. I just like the fact that this board is full of smart, funny people.

Well, as an official newbie who only summoned up the courage to post two days ago, all I can say is it’s great. SDMB is a cross section of society with so many people from different backgrounds and with different views. I have been lurking for well over a year now and filched several of the arguments posted here to defend my point of view - which made me look very intelligent and articulate and also shut up the people who had the audacity to think they were right 😉
It’s very refreshing to find a place where I will always see something I’m interested in and dispells my fear that all Americans are like the guests on Jerry Springer!
Well, that’s enough of my nauseating " love me and accept me cos I’m a newbie speech" so I’ll just scurry back to my dark corner and hide.

I remember you from Cygnus’ board, though we never talked much.
I just started posting here this week and did not lurk at all before now, so I’m very new. I’ve only been to the Pit (goodness gracious!) and Mundane Pointless Stuff until today. I am enjoying it very much so far.
One thing I can say: there are SO MANY THREADS!! And they can go on for thousands and thousands of posts. That’s a little daunting, and I find that I just stick to a few threads and don’t really venture out from there. There are just so many topics and nothing seems to get archived or closed. It’s overwhelming and I feel that I could sit here for days and never work or do anything else but read.
But I like this board. The posters are very intelligent and, except for the Pit (goodness gracious!), there are no cruel comments and insults over silly disagreements.

TracyMarie, when I first started here, I took about three weeks to read every post throughout the history of the SDMB on the web. Took forever, but I learned alot and felt alot less ‘new’ when I got done.
Of course, the board is about 10x the size it was then, so I can’t say I blame you for not doing the same, but don’t be afraid! Dive right in! Use Search to find stuff that interests you, and go to town.

I have been trying to curb the amount of time I spend on these boards in favor of real life so I have not been visiting some of the boards I used to frequent. Cygnus’ board is among these.
There are plenty of religious debates in Great Debates if you want to get your feet wet over there.

SDMB is BAD. SDMB has caused bad bite marks on me.
Since I found the SDMB, both my cat and my child have taken to biting me when I eventually turn my attention to either of them. I have rather placated my child by explaining that “mommy has _ **very** _ important work to do on the computer–but if you play nice–mommy can get her _work_ done, then maybe you’ll get a prize!” My cat, uh…
anybody want a nice… er, that is, _wild_ white cat?
Since I found this site, I have abandoned about 98% of my browsing, but it’s worth it! This is more informational and entertaining than anything I’ve ever found! And I usually love and covet the interactions between the “elitist” members who ‘know’ each other so well.
Now, that said, My Quest:
I propose all us newbies band together & demand a lottery. Once a week, the winner of a drawing will win oh, about 2000 fake ‘posts’ to be added to our total…Just for a day! Whaddaya say, kids? We’ll never catch up with these bloated, elitist bast… I mean posters! It’s the only way! C’mon! Are you with me?
P.S. I know there are a lot of good classics I haven’t read, but IMHO the “Evil Nazi Groundhog” thread was the funniest thing I have ever read in my life & should be 1) published, and 2) _required_ reading for any newbie.

I’ve been enjoying the SDMB for about a month, and I really like it, too. This is a whole new world for me, this message board thing. That sort of makes me feel like an even-newer-than-new newbie. So I’ve mostly been lurking, laughing, taking it all in.
