I lived in Nevada. I have friends that worked at or work at the Test Site. Nevada is a perfectly good place to store actual nuclear waste (not to mention secure storage of basically weapons grade materials, which is actually what your article is talking about), as long as it’s done right. I know you and many of your fellow state citizens don’t agree with that, but sometimes you have to suck it up. It’s the least bad option…certainly a hell of a lot better than what we’ve been doing, which is to store the stuff in-situ at the nuclear power plants where it’s more vulnerable, costs more to try and support and protect and has a higher probability of leaking and causing issues in more populated areas. Reality sucks sometimes. I have a friend who worked at the Test Site. 2 years ago now, he had to have his hands and feet amputated. His immune system doesn’t work at all. He’s already got one settlement from the federal government and has 2 more pending lawsuits. If it’s so safe, leave it where it is or find someone who wants it: we don’t. ---

The Test Site has been used and active for decades, so you have layers of what was, is and will be considered ‘safe’ going forward. I sympathize with your friend, but this stuff happens in the real world. There are all sorts of things that can cause cancer, or cause amputation. Even at the Test Site, it doesn’t necessarily mean it was radiation…it could be a lot of the toxic chemicals they used in the past. Cold comfort for your friend, but the problem isn’t storing nuclear waste…which, again, isn’t what your article was about to start this thread. As for leaving it where it is, that’s often a bad choice. It’s better to have a central repository for stuff so it can be better handled, safeguarded and protected. Certainly high grade weapons material needs to be centralized for security reasons alone, not just left willy-nilly at a bunch of different locations. ---

Nevada owes the federal government nothing for the money the federal government wasted: that was their call, no one forced them to spend that money. BTW, why is everyone overlooking the fact that the federal government lied in court and then did what they weren’t supposed to do? THAT is why there is such distrust in the west: we can actually list and show all the times we were lied to. The Bundy clan et. al. didn’t just happen in a vacuum eh. ---

Of course I’m fine with it being stored somewhere else where it will affect other people as long as it doesn’t affect me: so are you and everyone else who’s trying to force it on Nevada; did you really think that an accusation of NIMBYism would hold up when NIMBY is what is causing people to want to force it on Nevada?? :dubious: If a cause is a good one, it wouldn’t be necessary for supporters to lie and then ignore court orders and legal proceedings. But since it promotes your cause, I’m guessing everyone who’s commented so far but hasn’t denounced the federal government’s actions that prompted the OP actually supports the “get it to Nevada any way we can” sentiment.
