Catch The Gamers if you can. Not a knock-off but it does what it does in that genre very well.
Oh, and I’d like to see Katherine Kurtz’s Deryni books made into live action. But it will never happen. No large following.
As a fan of both “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Sword of Shanara” I was looking forward to at least rumors of the script writing of the latter shortly after “The Fellowship of the Ring” but I’ve yet to hear word one in that direction. Color me surprised. Maybe the execs think they’re just too similar?
I would kill to see a big budget big screen version of this. Just the first five books. With the Massive AI used for LOTR, Patternfall would be awesome. With the CGI being where it is, Hellrides and Patternwalks, and Rebma, and Tir would be amazing.
The Sci-Fi channel is supposed to be doing it as a four part mini-series, or so I heard awhile back.
OK, ArdenRanger, let’s help 'em out and cast that puppy! As a strategy, we could whip up popular sentiment for our slate of actors to the point where some Hollywood dimbulb hears the buzz and runs with it. Whaddya say? Who do you like for Julian? Benedict? Brand? etc.
C’mon, gang! Mary and Becky can sew the costumes and we can use my uncle’s old barn!
(Whoops, wrong enthusiasm. Must obtain caffiene soon)
heh. Actually, there’s a casting discussion going on right now over here.
I want some of what my board members are smoking.
Geez, thanks for the link. Some interesting ideas there.
Pervy elf fancier? I love it. Hey, even as a straight dude, gotta admit Legolas is seriously hot. Plus he gets a number of understated but very cool moves in both pictures. Love the walking-on-top-of-snow that he does while the others are slogging through it in LOTR and the incredible horse-mount in TTT.
THE WHEEL OF TIME - Robert Jordan.
9 (big) books strong. They could never ever make a movie - but they could do a series… and it would rock i tells ye !!
It’s junk young adult fantasy, I know, but if someone made a movie based on the Valdemar books by Mercedes Lackey, I would be a very happy girl.
Not that it matters, but they were using 3rd Edition in the D&D movie. No 18/00 strength…
Had to move the thread to here in case anyone’s interested.
It’s all in the ears. Don’t care for Orlando Bloom, don’t much care for blondes, but a blonde Legolas does it for me all day.
No one’s mentioned Dragonlance yet?
Thanks for the link Arden; I haven’t come across a decent Amber Diceless group in a while. Think I’ll go lurk a bit…
Actually, there’s been a rumor about a Conan sequel for a number of years. Here’s an article from July 2000 talking about “King Conan.” Though the latest news seems to be that it won’t happen after all.
Good thread. I do hope the current vogue inspires someone to make a decent Narnia movie or movies (this possibility has been discussed elsewhere on the Boards). I think the technology and, more importantly, the artistry now available means it could look just fantastic.
Ethilrist mentioned superhero movies. I don’t care about the rest but I DO wish they’d actually make some significant progress with the Fantastic Four live action movie. According to the wonderful ‘Coming Attractions’ site (one of the few that are almost as addictive as this one), the FF movie is happening, but it’s been stuck in what they call ‘Development Hell’ forever.
ianzin - you know about 8-10 years ago they actually made a Fantastic Four movie, but it turned out so bad that they were too embarassed to release it, even to cover their losses. You can find it online or at comic book conventions. I’ve seen it, it’s extremely bad. It’s about as bad as you would expect a 1970’s TV series about the FF to be but it was made in the early/mid 90’s.
Wouldn’t it be cool if they did ‘The Coming of GALACTUS!’ in the new movie? I’m tired of every comic book movie being an origin story.
Your wish shall be granted
POTTER, TOLKIEN ENTHUSIASM INSPIRES NARNIA MOVIE
Walden Media, privately held entertainment media division of the Anschultz Group investment firm, has joined with The C. S. Lewis Co. to make a live-action feature film of Lewis’s children’s novel The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. The book, the second in the seven-part series, The Chronicles of Narnia, was first published in 1950 and is currently published by HarperCollins. Walden, which was launched last May, has optioned all seven books in the series, according to its CEO Cary Granat, former president of Miramax Films’ Dimension label.
I don’t know about you, but i think spinoffs will be natural. That is the age we live in, so here’s what i think.
Ever since they appeared, i loved Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog. Now that i look back, the games didn’t have much, but were very creative. Sonic spun off from Mario, but it was fantasy fun.
I would pay to see a Super Mario Brothers remake, and i wouldn’t mind having a part to play in its production. That live action one from ago was quite a joke, FYI. As for Sonic the Hedgehog, i think it would be neat. Make these into kid’s movies instead of having to invent newer, and crappier cartoons to entertain youth of America. Ah those good old days of Saturday morning cartoons. They should really look back to those to get some spinoff ideas.
I beg to differ! At the time D&D: The Movie was scripted, 3rd Edition didn’t exist yet. And besides, I seem to recall the producer pretty much admitting that he based his movie on the 2nd Edition AD&D rules (except, of course, for the myriad times he departed from the rules to make his movie look more “cool” or “dramatic” ).
Wizards of the Coast does have write-ups of the major characters in the D&D movie using the 3rd Edition rules (at http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=movie/mx20001208c), but (A) these write-ups were ex-post-facto, and were not used by the film’s producers/writers, and (B) these write-ups are for the cheap-o D&D Adventure Game which doesn’t have any character classes other than fighter, thief, wizard, and cleric.
Second? Da hell?
Much as I’d like to see a well-done version of George R.R. Martin’s Song of Fire and Ice, I’d rather he finish the series first. I also have to agree that it’d be pretty much unfilmable–most of the series’ strength comes from the large cast of complex, conflicted, and downright interesting characters; strip that character depth and breadth away, and what you have left would make only a mediocre story.
I’ll second the mention of Lackey’s Valdemar schloss–it’d translate well to big screen.
Amber, definitely.
I’d like to see a movie or, better, large-budget miniseries, based around Steven Brust’s stories of Taltos the assassin.
I believe that Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials books are currently under development. I’d love to see what Terry Gilliam could do with that source material.
I’d also like to see more of Clive Barker’s non-Hellraiser stuff on-screen. Weaveworld or Imajica could look great on the big-screen, given a big enough budget and the right creative team.
