I know several “cooks” who could totally disabuse you of that quaint notion.
But for goofs by good cooks I agree completely. e.g. 2 days ago I got the proportions all wrong on an experimental pork loin stuffing. It came out very unlike my plan. But delicious nonetheless. So once I prove out the original plan I’ll have two variations.

If you are talking about potato chips (as opposed to what the English call chips) then it wasn’t so much that they were burned as the chef just got pissed off at a picky customer who kept complaining that his fried potatoes were too thick. So the chef cut them as thin as he possibly could and threw a bunch of salt over them just to spite the customer. To everyone’s surprise, they ended up being pretty tasty.
