Hi, I'm Tripler. I'm an adult. . . and I play with Legos.

I just wanted to come in here & say Lego(s) suck!

Anyone know where I can rent a kid? :o

Ordinarily, I don’t pay much attention to what a company’s PR firm says about the proper usage of their trademarked names. But the Lego Group and their products have brought me a great deal of joy through the years, and I figure that calling them what they like is the least that I can do in return. So yes, I do call them “Lego pieces” rather than “Legos”, or at least make an effort to.

Can I quote you as my sig?

Look, man, if Canadians still can’t get people to use the term Canada geese, the Lego folks are SOL when it comes to getting the masses to get behind their idiosyncratic demand.

It’s only Americans I’ve heard referring to them as “Legos” - all the people I’ve encountered in Australia, NZ and the UK refer to them as “Lego” or “Lego pieces/bricks”

I have managed to restrain myself to the smaller architectural/landmark kits. I have Berlin, Venice, the UN, the Seattle Space Needle, and the Guggenheim, at least.
If I happened to see the large Star Destroyer set, though, I might lose control. And the Saturn V set looks pretty damned good. I have been known to drool in Lego stores.

My only objection is that they are too easy. I do construct lots of Puzz-3D 3D jigsaw puzzles, which do not come with step by step instructions. Lego sets, though, are far better made. And a lot more expensive.

BTW, we give Lego Advent calendars to our kids every year - and my son-in-law who was an addict before my grandson was born. No time now.

Agreed. I even used to pronounce it differently as “lay-go” because I think that’s the Euro accent I heard most often amongst my friends whose families were from Netherlands.

Hi Tripler, my whole family does Lego. The wife has the entire Christmas village that she sets up every year, the Yellow Submarine and other assorted holiday items. I’m more a fan of 80’s Lego Spaceman type sets. The boy (age 15) has multiple Star Wars sets he likes to set up in scenarios. I have the Cult of Lego book on my desk at work. And please don’t look under the bed… there’s a bag of circa 1969 Lego bricks collecting dust.

There’s a small Lego Store in the mall by my house. The way it works there is that they have about 20-30 bins and each bin has 1(or maybe two related) type(s.) One bin might have nothing but white window frames and red shutters. The next bin might be 2x2 flat grays with axles and hubs with different rubber tires that fit the hubs. Next to that might be assorted colors of standard height 2x1s. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason to what they have each time.
As for price, they have a couple different size containers that you pay for by container size, no matter what you manage to stuff in there.
Most of the displays are just completed Lego kits, but I have seen life-sized Star Wars characters and the like on display.

Now, onto my guilty secret. I not only Lego, but I Mega Bloks. In all fairness, it’s mainly “Halo” branded sets and I only buy anything of any brand if it’s on clearance or killer sale. It an agreement that I have with both my wife and bank account.

A quick tip for people who actually have kids to use as an excuse. I hate to give them publicity, but check Toys ‘R’ Us on Saturdays for special events. Sometimes they’ll have a “Lego Event” where the kids get an instruction sheet and all the pieces to build a small model for free. At the last one I was at, I my youngest (15) made a cute little Frankenstein Monster. It was around 30 pieces and took about 15 minutes to build.

Peace - DESK

It depends on the the Lego store.I have been to two and the one in NYC is much bigger and more impressive than the one in Peabody MA. You could probably find some but not most of the pieces you’d like in NYC.

I want to tell you a secret, but you are going to find it frustrating because they have put orders on hold until mid-feb: you can order just about any piece you want on the Lego website. The trick is that you don’t go to the by the brick section which is actually pretty limited but the section for missing pieces you “lost”. They don’t require any proof that you own a given set and let you order “replacements” for those lost pieces. All you need to do is find a set that contains the desired pieces and look it up by set number. You can buy most, but not literally all, pieces this way. Including set minifigures - I even ordered extra babies from that in the park set. Alas, you cannot get the blind bag minifigures this way, though.

The last time I bought Lego was when first reading The Brick Testament and liking the ghost figure for some reason. I bought a set of 3 or 4 of them off EBay. The even cooler thing about them is that if you pull off the ghost shell, they are the skeleton figure underneath.

I’m getting back into Lego now that I’m almost single, and have some extra money. I’m 2/3 of the way done with my Saturn V. It’s awesome.

Anyone wanna buy K’nex, I mean the whole company?

I build LEGO sets but I never “play” with the end result. I just like the building; I don’t really care what happens to it after the building is over. The finished products either get given to the nephews or they go on top of a cabinet to collect dust.
