I avoided making spares for my honda ridgeline and on several occasions paid dearly for replacements.
Amusingly enough after accidentally smashing my key fob leaving me with a chunk of plastic attached to just the metal part of the key…it works just fine without the electronics of the fob
We bring wire cutters when we rent cars. Seriously.
Losing one key would be painfully expensive.
Losing both would be a serious problem.
Some years back we rented a small SUV from a local agency, for a long weekend trip. We immediately separated the keys. When we returned the car, we put them both on a regular split ring.
3 weeks later, we need a rental car again - and would up with the exact same car… complete with our split ring!
The OP was fed a line of bullshit. Hertz had that second key somewhere. If I were purchasing a used car, I’d definitely walk away from the deal or insist on a price reduction - I need that spare key!
