high fructose corn syrup is awesome!

Oh, I hate these commercials, too.

We eat pretty healthfully, so just to see, I took an inventory of everything I have in my pantry/fridge.

I expected to find and did find HFCS in the Special K, Canada Dry ginger ale and the Klondike bars.

I expected to find, but did not fine HFCS in the Nestle’s Quik and the cheap peanut butter.

I did not expect to find HFCS, but did find it in the Ocean Spray cranberries.

All in all I only found 4 items in our pantry

ETA: I forgot to check the condiment cabinet, so add Heinz Ketchup. That makes 5.

Well, if 80% of the foods you pick up are processed then I’m still not seeing your vehement reaction. Did you really not expect to find HFCS in cream cheese and ketchup, both of which are highly-sweetened, highly processed, highly artificial products. Ditto store-brand ham, ditto lunch meat. Ditto chips, cookies, and crisps. Honestly I’m not trying to snark-snipe, here, I’d just figured most people were aware of what goes into their food. Do you really not make a habit of examining the ingredients of what you eat? HFCS has been around for years.

Additionally, I think characterizing it as “chemically altered” syrup from “genetically modified” corn is more hyperbole than argument. Genetic modification has been a critical component of engineering higher yields - if you don’t like GE crops in general… okay. That’s a value judgment and I understand the argument for it.

Don’t get me wrong - I think it’s an abomination and the worst kind of franken-food. Conversely the real problem here is people eating too much shitty food too often; I never found it profoundly shocking that it’s also filled with shitty ingredients.

To the people who love Passover Coke, there is a year-round option: Mexican Coke. You can get it (in glass bottle!) from any Mexican grocery store. It tends to cost a little bit more (like a dollar a bottle), but personally, I don’t drink much soda, so I don’t mind paying for a special treat.

Read the label because not all of it is sucrose or cane sugar anymore.

I was pleased to notice that my bread (Whole Foods store brand) contains actual honey!
