Hiking shoe recommendations

Go with whatever fits best. Everything else comes a distant second.

I’m partial to Salomon boots because they tend to be very light while still being very stable, and are very well built and very durable. Presently I wear Salomon 3D Fastpacker Mid GTXe boots which have all the bells and whistles, and are very stable, but feel more like a heavy running shoe than a hiking boot. The days of having to wear heavy leather dreadnoughts to get stability are long gone.

I have a pair of the Keen Voyageur hiking shoes that I love although I do wish the laces came up a titch higher so that I could snug my heel in like in running shoes. I generally don’t go more than 3-5 miles on a walk/hike since I take my dogs with me but I would have no problems going 10 in them (if I weren’t too lazy). I have had them for about a year and have worn them every weekend and most week nights on both paved and rocky roads/trails.

When I get my next pair will be low/mid height boot because my right ankle is very unstable and adding in uneven trails is a recipe for an evening of icepacks on my ankle.
