The attack on Pearl Harbor was a tactical success but a strategic failure. The survival of the carriers was certainly important but at least as important, if not more so, was the Japanese failure to take out the oil storage depots and dry docks. The USS Yorktown was damaged in the Battle of Coral Sea and estimates figured on three months to repair her. The repair docks at Pearl Harbor got the Yorktown back into shape in three days so it could participate in the Battle of Midway (where she was heavily damaged again and sunk shortly afterwards).
