William of Orange, great hero of the Ulster Unionists, was a Catholic.

Considering the lack of acceptance of Homosexuals in the military. The fact that Alexander The Great was homosexual, and so to (probably) was Lawrence of Arabia. Two of the greatest military men of all time.
Cheers, Keithy
Or possibly bisexual :).
From what I’ve read the records on this are a bit ambiguous, but Alexander did seem to have had genuine relationships of a sort with some women, particularly his fling with Barsine ( mother of his illegitimate son Heracles and widow of his foe, the redoubtable Greek general in Persian employ, Memnon of Rhodes ), who was a number of years his senior. All in all he had three wives ( political and to secure heirs, to be sure ) Roxanne ( mother of his legitimate son, Alexander IV - some have surmised he had genuine feelings for her as well ), Stateira ( also called Barsine, murdered by Roxanne after Alexander’s death ), and Parysatis ( who disappears from history after her marriage ). But it also appears he also had affairs with at least the aforementioned Barsine and at least one, possibly two others ( that we know about )
But it does seem probable that his childhood friend and closest companion Hephaestion was the greatest love of his life.

Not only those, but also Peter the Great.
And Socrates, Aristotle, William Shakespeare (according to a Yahoo! news story last spring), and many more in Rome and Greece. Queers founded Western Civilization. Zounds, Fred.
That some people today root for Bruno Richard Hauptmann and not Lindbergh. Haputmann was convicted and seen as guilty for the kidnapping and killing of Lindbergh’s baby, and was sent to the chair for it. He was seen as the bad guy back then, but now some believe he didn’t do it and was set up by the police, who needed to find someone. Lindbergh, originally the nation’s hero, became an outspoken defender of the Nazis and would later be seen as outdated and controversal.
That all kinds of people drive Volkswagens, a car originally invisioned by Hitler.
That in the last two thousand years countless terrible atrocities have been conducted in the name of ‘Christianity.’
I just finished reading the Symposium a few minutes ago. It ends with a lot of flirting between Socrates, Alcibiades and Agathon. Wow.
And you don’t need a Yahoo news source. Just read Sonnet XX
Too bad most of T. E. Lawrence’s claims to military greatness were only recorded in his own accounts. Many historians now think that The Seven Pillars of Wisdom at best embellishes the truth, at worst is a total fraud.
I went to the same college as T.E. The College Record actually referred to him as “adventurous,” so no irony there.
The pro-Confederate John Wilkes Booth, in attempting to strike a blow for Dixie, killed the very man that could’ve kept the righteously indignant North from exacting vengeance on the South, thereby retarding the reconstruction and reconciliation of the two countries.
Dumb-ass.
From my own HO, I’ll disagree that this retarded reconstruction ( though I absolutely agree Booth was shooting the South in the foot ). I’m of the opinion that Reconstruction ended far too soon and quite incompletely. Lincoln’s positions as expressed to that point ( which was still not completely fleshed out when he was killed ) were too lenient and incomplete IMHO.
I base this analysis largely on Eric Foner’s excellent multi-award winning volume Reconstruction:America’s Unfinished Revolution, 1863-1877 ( 1988, Harper & Row ). Pretty hefty at 600+ pages of text, but well-written and exhaustively researched. Highly recommended.

Actually let me amend that - Booth was shooting the pro-Confederacy southerners in the foot.

Volkswagen is a manufacturer of cars, not a car.
Nor can I see the irony here. Hitler thought it would be a good idea to make a car that everyone could afford and use. Not exactly an original thought and he played no part in the design or manufacture of them.
My friend adds another line to that song “A brand new bike when you haven’t got any legs”
“No, Alanis. A black fly in your chardonnay is not ironic; that would be unfortunate. Irony is a stark contrast between what is expected and what actually is. You get points for effort, though.”
Above: [Someone had to do it]
This one get’s my vote as ironic, how come I have never heard this one before? I googled the exact line, and came up empty. Anyone know where I can find more on this?
Sorry. It was “Nothing of importance happened today.” Google for “King George III diary July 4, 1776”. Of course, they didn’t have cell phones in those days, but it is ironic still.
I heard wrong, then. IRC King Louis of France said that about the time the Revolution was on.
