Yep, and #1 on Cash Box’s list. When it was #3 on Billboard (8/13/66), it was beaten out by Summer in the City (The Loving Spoonful) and Lil’ Red Riding Hood (Sam The Sham and the Pharoahs), and just ahead of Wild Thing (The Troggs.) Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, it spent 10 weeks on the charts, while Wild Thing only spent 8 (thought that did hit #1) and Summer in the City only spent 5. (Lil’ Red Riding Hood also spent 10, but peaked at #2). Amazingly, looking a bit further down the list, The Beatles’ “Paperback Writer” also spent 10 weeks on the chart, so “They’re Coming to Take Me Away” spent as much time on the Hot 100 as “Paperback Writer.”
