i don’t know, Rickman has the right vocal inflections for the role, yet i still see Stephen Moore as the true voice of Marvin…
i mean it’d be like having Barry White do the voice of Darth Vader, yes he has (had, i know ☹ ) a deep gravelly voice, but it still wouldn’t seem right
if they were going more for humor, i’d love to have seen John DiMaggio as the voice of Marvin…

I just finished watching The Italian job, and while I am wary as to how versatile Mos Def is as an actor, I don’t think him playing Ford Prefect is going to drag the HGTTG movie down either. Is acted like a pretty cool guy as a con man. But is he going to assimilate Ford Prefect, or is he just going to act like himself? That’s what I want to know.
Now with this recent decision to cast Alan Rickman as Marvin…well…I’m becoming of the opinion such a brilliant decision couldn’t possibly exist along with a bad uninformed one in the same production. It’s pretty relieving really.
Now when can we expect a trailer with some actual footage?

I don’t want to piss on the parade, but does anyone else this that “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” is a perfect example of a book that will lose a lot in translation to the big screen?

Nah, it’s a radio series that lost a lot in translation to print.
A film adaptation is much less of a stretch, and will play much more to DNA’s strengths.

You know, even if this film does suck, I’m still going to go see it. In fact, I’ll probably see it a couple of times. Why? Because, dagnabbit, even a sucky HHGTTG is better than yet another remake of some crappy TV series, or yet another sequel to some crapfest of a film that just barely made a profit, and if a beloved geekbook like HHGTTG can make a profit at the box office, then, perhaps Hollywood will be inspired to do film versions of others that won’t suck. (And even if they don’t, the fact that they’re pushing films like _Scooby Doo XXIII_ out of the theaters can only be considered to be a _good_ thing.)

I remember a prediction of mine that said Peter Jackson’s LOTR will never be able to do justice to the books…and, uh, I was wrong. Big time wrong.
I will defer to the error of my last prediction and wait until I can see more. Who knows…one can hope it turns out to be a great film. I read the book decades ago and my weak memory of the book is that it was filled with ridiculous humor, so let’s give them the benefit of the doubt until we are able to see more.

Apparently, there was a contest sometime back where contestants got to write in questions to the director and producer of the HGTTG movie, Garth Jennings and Nick Goldsmith. Also, [the British and American books](http://www.planetmagrathea.com/news.html) in the HGTTG series are getting new covers, and they look a helluva lot better than the ones in bookstores right now. I refuse to buy books with the heinous 42 grid design. All copies I have given to friends have been purchased used from either thrift shops, or used book stores.

That’s why I have the Complete “Trilogy” in the leather bound edition. Looks great :D.

I remember my seventh grade math teacher (1998?), a big fan of the HHGTTG series (like myself) who once lent me her copy of the movie from the 80s (?) telling me about this. I’ve been looking forward to it for some time.
Mos Def as Ford Prefect is an interesting casting decision I never would’ve thought of, that I think will work out well.
The portrayal of the HHGTTG as a book (at least in the video on the front page of the official website) is a little troubling.
Jim Carrey in HHGTTG? Ugh. You must be kidding, **QuickSilver**. I mean, he’s appropriate for some parts and really, really inappropriate for others, and I’d file this in the latter.

I concur wholeheartedly. He would be a perfect Arthur Dent. It’s a shame they didn’t go with him.

I did, too. But as explained above, the portrayal in this film seems to actually be closer to Adams’ original idea.

Probably, IMO, because they knew nobody who would see it had actually read it. That, and the fact that _I, Robot_ was a collection of short stories, not a novel, pretty much doomed it. There was no plot or cast of characters for the movie to inherit.
