Nothing of any significance had been hidden from Hitler. In fact, Hitler refused to believe the numbers that he was given about Soviet troop strength and such. To almost the end, he didn’t understand how badly beat up the remnants of his military was. This scene is his “a-ha” moment. The guy was just plain delusional. What a surprise. ---

I saw a WWII movie recently where a German officer identified his affiliation as SS-Gestapo. Weren’t those two different organizations? Was it possible for an officer to be in both? ---

Here is the organizational chart for all branches of the SS: [https://www2.bc.edu/~heineman/SSorg.jpg](https://www2.bc.edu/~heineman/SSorg.jpg) That scene with Hitler has been fairly well documented in a number of biographies; Ian Kershaw’s come immediately to mind. IIRC, it was described in detail by Traudl Junge, one of Hitler’s secretaries, in her diary. The reason for Hitler’s outburst is that the forces he was counting on to stop the Russians outside of Berlin failed miserably (largely because they existed mostly on paper). At the point where he’s informed that Steiner (commander of the XX SS, if I’m not mistaken) hasn’t launched his counteroffensive, he loses it and screams “Das war ein Befehl!” (“That was an order!”). He then goes on to admit for the first time ever that the war is lost. Ho got so worked up over what he considered to a personal betrayal that he may actually have had a mild heart attack; he had had a progressive heart condition for well over a year. ---

Somehow I got the impression that there was SS, and there was Gestapo. I never realized one was part of the other. ---

Bruno Ganz (the legendary German actor playing Hitler) gets almost as mad as Hitler is in that scene if you mention it’s appropriation for the memes. He’s not amused. ---
