Hitler was probably not a true believer in every aspect of Nazi ideology. He cynically adopted platforms that appealed to different segments in Germany, including nationalists, old fashioned conservatives, and aristocratic types. Many of them had long held “Aryanist” type views. A lot of the " Aryan" rhetoric was originated in the 19th century by a Frenchman named Arthur de Gobineau and expanded upon an Englishman named Houston Stewart Chamberlain. Gobineau used the theory to justify the supremacy of the European nobility and aristocracy, and Chamberlain extended that to “Teutons” such as Anglo-Saxons and Germans, and became a naturalized German citizen later in life.
Hitler did not invent any of this, he merely tapped into fairly long established beliefs. As for his own appearance, Hitler indeed had blue eyes, and this was a widely commented upon feature. Also while objectively he was not handsome and rather poorly built, the aura of power he had as the Nazi fuhrer perhaps made him seem more “Aryan” to his followers. People not under his spell see a short ugly jackass with a goofy haircut and funny mustaches barking out mediocre German, but the swooning (and often heavily female) crowds at his rallies resemble nothing other than Elvis or Beatles concerts.
Also, the term “Aryan” pointedly excluded Jews, Gypsies, and black Africans. People who didn’t have those elements in their ancestry usually were deemed Aryan by default. The Japanese allies were sort of “Eastern Aryans”. Hungarians and Finns were also Axis partners to some degree, though linguistically, they had no “Aryan” connections. Also in propaganda tp with North African or Middle Eastern Arabs, the Nazis had to explain that their “Antisemitism” had nothing against Arabs, and some Arabs were even told they were “Aryan” (Hitler met with the Grand Mufti of Jersualem). There was even a Muslim S.S. Division (Handschar Division)…which I am sure would offend modern Neo-Nazis.
