Hmmm, looks like Bloom County may be coming back

First strip of 2015 is up!

ETA: Ninja’d by Uniqueorn!

Here’s some further info.

The first year of Boom County made it look like it’d be one of the greats. But it slowly went downhill (even to the point of Breathed actually writing in a strip: “Really, this is funny.”). In the beginning, he nailed each joke to the point of brilliance, but as time went on, he was just off enough so that the full humor wasn’t there. And it devolved into Opus, who is best in small doses.

It was pretty good for quite some time though. Not as good as Calvin & Hobbes but better than almost any other strip. Right up there with The Far Side and 70s Doonesbury or 60s Peanuts.

Ack. Oop. Thppt. Wow.

I’m still looking for that strip where someone (Maybe the little genius) hacks…something (sorry this is so vague) and the dad is morally perplexed. The final line is something like “Bombs or …something…it’s not a difficult choice dad”

Wow. Some of my Doper heroes have totally ruined my good impression of them in this thread…

I have that in a book somewhere. It’s “Buicks or bombs”.

Hairy fishnuts?

Here 'tis.

Looks like it was the IRS.

I’m personally very pleased that Mr. Breathed has decided to start again.

Back when he was being dogged with accusations of copying Doonesbury, a comics critic (The Comics Journal’s R. Fiore) noted that calling Berke Breathed a wonderful stylist is a bit like complimenting a shoplifter for being a sharp dresser.

Oh god, Doonesbury sucks ass, and Bloom County is the best.

Because they don’t like the comic strip you like?

Yeah, maybe it’s an either/or thing. I could have said the same thing Ukelele Ike about enjoying many of the strips but loathing many more about Doonesbury. I’ll take Bloom County over Doonesbury any day.

Put me in the Bloom County camp. Doonesbury never appealed to me.

Is there any indication as to where (online) new strips will be, or how often they’ll come out?

Yes, totally. I’m going to declare jihad over a comic strip.

I was more than half-joking (although not liking Bloom County does seem to call their taste into question…).

That was my take on it, too. In 1981 and 1982, Bloom County was the best comic strip ever up to that time, even eclipsing Doonesbury in its glory days.

But each year after that, it lost a bit of its edge. It was still mostly enjoyable into the mid-1980s, but by 1983, it was good rather than amazing, and by 1987, it wasn’t even good most of the time.

It still is the best comic ever. It’s hard to maintain a level of greatness over a long period, we see that in TV series all the time. I hope it comes back for a long ride- even in its later years, it was still better than anything else.

That may be why I wasn’t able to follow it daily.

Is the new strip going to be weekly? Or just whenever he feels like putting up a new strip?
