Hobby shops

My father is an avid modeler (mostly aircraft), and even goes to out-of-state model contests. The plaques from the contests he’s won hang in the living room. There are quite a few model/hobby shops around here, but we live in a pretty densely populated area.

In the tiny town where I grew up, there was only one hobby shop in town, Happy’s Hobby Hut. I can still smell the modeling paint and balsa wood from those shops.

Hobby Lobby is terrible (I’ve personally been boycotting them for years) and should not be mentioned in this thread. What a misnomer of a store.

But of course, it’s possible that Hobby Lobby is what’s coming to replace his Kmart… in which case I am so, so sorry.

I quite like Hobby Lobby.

That said, I buy yarn there, and my mother buys stickers, and fabric, and cross stitching supplies.

And they have a lot of decorative crap we don’t buy.

And if someone is dreaming of model railroads and airplanes. I’d be surprised if Hobby Lobby has much to offer.

But that’s not my hobby, so what do I know?

The owners of Hobby Lobby do the god thing, which makes me uncomfortable enough to go to Joann Fabrics instead. AND they’re not open on Sundays, which means that half of the time I would ever go there, I can’t. I’m boycotting Chick-fil-a for similar reasons.

Anyway, I really hope that OP is not going to be getting a Hobby Lobby where Kmart used to be.

Well, I disagree. Hobby Lobby provides hobby supplies in rocketry, painting, model building, jewelry making and lots of other niche hobbies that cannot be found anywhere else. Plus, their prices are very fair, with constant sales, and weekly 40% off coupons.

Joanns does not provide even half of the selection of hobby materials, and their cotton fabrics and other materials are significantly more expensive.

The Sunday and 8pm closing time are a pain, but totally worth it. I always say they should hire Jewish people to work Sundays; that way, everyone gets their Sabbath protected.

That’s cool. I won’t shop there, but whatever works for you. I think a mom-and-pop hobby store would be better suited for the OP’s interests, though.
