Hold onto your butts Mid-Atlantic Dopers. Here comes Isabel!!

well, one thing about living in a high-rise here in nova, don’t have to worry about the waters hitting my apt. (on the 6th floor). but don’t look forward to all the whining and complaining at work after it hits. hmm, maybe time to take some of that vacation I need to take  just hope it doesn’t dammage the ren faire for the 4th of oct.

My neighbors have a dead tree right next to our small 1-car garage. We’ve been hoping they’d take down it down this summer.
I think I’ll park my car in the garage. Maybe I’ll get a new car and a 2-car garage out of it.
We also need a new roof. I hope Isabel blows our roof right off. Maybe I should paint a target on it.

I talked to my mom yesterday - she lives in Harford County north of Baltimore. She just got a new roof put on the house. And a few months ago, she replaced all the windows in the house.

On the positive side, last week my sibs were there helping her to close the pool and put away all the patio furniture, so that was good. And her generator works, so that’s good.

But she lives out in the boonies on a heavily wooded lot. So I’ll fret about her for a while.

On the other hand, my husband hates his car - I may suggest he park it under a tree…

Terrific - Richmond and environs haven’t had anywhere near enough rain this year.

Damn. the Broadway Flea Market was scheduled for September 23, 2001 and had to be moved up a week cause of 9/11. This year, I hope it’s not a case of the Flea Market being 9/21, barring acts of hurricanes.

I just want to wish a good luck and stay safe to all the dopers in the Isabel Range.

Bother. If it hits Toronto, around when would it get here? I have no idea.

All we need is giant pink alien grasshoppers or something. That’ll make it a perfect summer. :frowning:

Meanwhile, I’ll be sitting up here at 900 feet elevation looking down on the tops of the clouds (or sitting in the clouds…more likely) wondering what havoc it’s wreaking on the little people.

Jeeves! More champagne!

I’m more worried about the wind than the rain—I live in a very old house with a very old roof and very old windows, all of which my landlord has been promising to repair since I moved in 9 years ago. I may have to take Friday off and stay home with everything wrapped in plastic and the cats nailed to the floor . . .

Hmm…

I always imagined you more Central Park West 50th story with a passel of servants and the Cafe del Artiste at ground level.

I’m disappointed.

Well, this is, of course, just my country home. I trust the servents to look after the pied-à-terre on Central Park South . . .

Indeed.

Man, I love the Cafe del Artiste. Had a great year there one night.

Latest link from NOAA has it reaching DC at around 8pm on Thursday night.

Anyone know where to get some sandbags?

Gee, my flight to BWI is due in about 7:05 on Thursday - think I can sneak in before Isabel hits?

For the humor-impaired - I’m joking.

One good thing about hurricanes: they sure take your mind off the terrorists!

TEN FEET above sea level and you’re thinking of relocating? Wimp! Good grief, around here you have to travel 50 miles north of us to reach ground that high! We’re on local high ground – only six-tenths of a foot below sea level! (And that’s with a 2-1/2 foot mound under our house!) Blessings on the nice 20-foot levees…

Ten feet is fine unless you’re right on the water…and even then you’re probably fine!

We’re currently hoping Isabel hits one specific house in Wilmington, Delaware REAL hard. Pure karma. Long story that I won’t bore you with, but these particular people deserve it! Think we can get her to aim for just one house and leave the rest of you nice people alone?

Who do you think causes hurricanes? :dubious:

If we run from the hurricane, then the terrorists have won.

Weatherwonks frequently seem to be wrong about when and where a hurricane will hit. I bet it doesn’t hit the MD/DC/VA area at all and we get nothing more than heavy rain.

Mama Tiger, I grant that ten feet is plenty, usually. However, I live in a highly flood-prone spot. I doubt the flooding would get into the house, but I would certainly be stranded on my island-to-be.

However, the flooding is not why I am relocating. The magnolia tree which spans the entire front yard, is a better reason. I don’t want to be inside if part of it decides to enter the house from above.

Just got a call from my husband - he was on a quest for sandbags. The hurricane hasn’t hit yet, and they’re dealing with flooding already - the remnants of Henri, I believe. He said that not only was the sewer system in Havre de Grace not draining water from the rain, it was overflowing back into the streets and parking lots. I can’t imagine what they’ll have to deal with when Isabel roars thru town.

I will be fretting long distance. After my flight is canceled by the storm, I’ll reschedule - probably for next week.

Hey Nate - looks like that line’s headed over your house now!
