> For me, it tends to break down like this:
>
> Fall/winter holiday drinking- more like eggnog, punches and indoor spirits type drinking. Christmas, NYE, Thanksgiving Weekend. Alcohol seems to be a centerpiece to many holiday parties.
>
> Summer picnic drinking (4th of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day) - usually less alcohol-centric and more like someone has cold beer in the cooler, as well as a variety of sodas, tea and bottled water as well. Somehow not really as intended as a get-drunk kind of thing.

I do want to note that in my younger and single-er days, St. Patrick’s Day (well, the Saturday nearest to it) was a terrific excuse for an all-day party.

Now that I’m older and have kids, it seems like a pain in the ass, and the larger holidays are a little easier.

As an American of German extraction, I have to vote for Oktoberfest. For the large percentage of Americans of Polish extraction in our community it was Dyngus Day (Easter Monday).

The drunken 4th of July picnic was often a tradition around my friends and some family. Gee – excessive alcohol consumption and explosives. And people wonder why I spend most holidays at home.

Makes perfect sense, that way it doesn’t hurt so much when you lose a finger.

I remember telling my Italian buddy years ago one drunken St. Patty’s Day that they should give the new title of “Patron Saint of Ireland” to Foster Brooks.

Purim was a gimmee, but Chanukah? How about Passover? – 4 full cups of wine are mandated during the seder. It’s not just a tradition–it’s the Law.
