And this is the root of the problem. We live in the age of the false equivalence, where everybody is equally right and everybody is equally wrong and nobody can be blamed or criticized because, hey, everybody makes mistakes!
So the fact that 30% of the country believes something absolutely batshit insane is “balanced” by the President’s questionable tactics of waiting until now to release his long form birth certificate. Hey, everybody makes mistakes, right? If you’re not absolutely 100% perfect yourself you shouldn’t ever criticize others. You shouldn’t point out that a large segment of the Republican Party is utterly delusional, because that would be rude, and, hey, both sides are always equally wrong!
The problem with this country isn’t that we aren’t trying hard enough to get along. The problem with this country is that stupid crazy people have been allowed to believe their stupid crazy shit without people standing up and telling them that they’re stupid and crazy. What we need right now is a lot less Kumbaya and a lot more “Shut the fuck up, you crazy motherfucker!”
You’ve got problems with perspective if “so’s your face” counts as bashing or even an argument. You’ve got even bigger problems if you take something that was rather clearly a light hearted joke (and a Scrubs reference) and feel the need to take it literally and argue against it.
Straightforward but stupid. You reached for the farthest point you could find and put it there for scale. I’ve seen a similar argument against compromise and moderates that goes “one group wants to kill everyone. Another wants to kill nobody. The moderate solution would be to kill half the people.” Just because something is logical doesn’t make it intelligent or persuasive. Dropping the term nazi into a conversation just makes you look ignorant and desperate.
Plus the whole “nazi” thing really is losing it’s panache. There’s no zip left in it. It’s old news. Everybody uses the term nazi.
Just as dishonest as using the term “nazi” to make a rhetorical point. Godwin’s law isn’t obsolete. The people that referred to it just gave up because they were vastly outnumbered by the people who wanted to compare people to Hitler and the Nazis.
Anyone who took that approach to me for no reason other than religious or political beliefs had better be a hell of a lot bigger than me or he’ll be speaking with a lisp the next time he says that to someone.
I’ve seen a hell of a lot more craziness (and immaturity and selfishness and arrogance) in my life coming from the left than vice-versa.
And I’ve seen a lot more self-reliance, self-discipline and rewarding lifestyles coming from the right.
Not my theory–everyone makes mistakes, so blame everyone! I think Obama is an idiot because of his fiscal theories, but at least he tries. Also, as far as non-fiscal politics go, he’s not half bad. I also think the “conservatives” who actually thought Obama was born in Kenya are batshit insane. So am I not allowed to criticize both? Do I have to choose one?
No, the problem with this country is that people are going to extremes. I’m not saying you have to agree with, or be nice to, everyone (although, if you’re holding a mature, adult discussion, you should at least pretend to realize the other side is made of human beings too). What I mean is that if you’re fiscally conservative, you HAVE to be grouped with the whackos who picket funerals, while if you are socially liberal, you HAVE to be grouped with assholes who send humane fly catchers to our president, or who call the average steak lover a murderer, or who bomb meat factories. Why can’t we accept that both parties are fucking insane and create two new, moderate parties?
It doesn’t matter if you agree with them, but you are just as stupid as them if you summarize the issue as “Obama releasing his birth certificate”. It’s like debating whether death panels are a good idea or not when there were no death panels. As long as we let stupid people phrase the debate then we can’t make any progress.
So you prefer Bush who took a budget surplus , started 2 wars off the budget, slashed taxes to the wealthy and created a huge deficit and gave our bankers a couple trillion after they destroyed the economy? that is good economics? Obama was dealt this economic mess by Bush and his Libertarian friends.
I believe that Obama was not born in Hawaii but was actually formed by chemical reactions occurring after the death of a large star and gained sentience after millions of years of evolution. Prove me wrong, Anderson Cooper, prove me wrong.
Please, you need to give equal credence to the folks that think the right way to address the deficit is to cut taxes. It’s like the moon landing and flat earth, there are two sides (well technically you just have one side of a flat earth).
You are absolutley right. There’s exactly the same amount of evidence showing that cutting taxes will, in the medium-to-long run, raise revenue as there is evidence showing that Neil Armstrong was actually a liar.
Perhaps a more appropriate Don McLean reference would be, “Everybody loves me baby, what’s the matter with you?”
nonsequiter: Hatchet buried without apologies. No more rabies from me.
There’s so much stupid in this sentence I don’t know where to start.
In the first place, the idea that the right wing is fiscally conservative is a LIE. It’s a lie that you’ve been told for the last 30 years to get you to vote against your own economic self-interest. Because the real (and only) agenda of the Republican Party is More Money For Rich People. Sometimes they hide this agenda behind the Small Government/Fiscal Conservative banner, but as we’ve seen from the actual policies that get enacted when the Republicans are in power, they only believe in Small Government when it leads to More Money For Rich People. But if MMFRP requires letting spending balloon out of control as it did under Reagan and Bush, they’ll do that too. All of the social conservative issues are similarly a sham. All the stupid flag-waving, Muslim-hating, queer-bashing prayer breakfast crap is there to distract the hicks so they don’t notice how they’re getting fucked up the ass by the people they voted for.
Furthermore, I’ll point out that as a Democrat I don’t particularly worry about being associated with people who bomb meat factories. In the first place because that’s just a made-up extreme position you threw in there to help create a sense of false equivalence, and secondly because the Democrats are pretty good about distancing themselves from the tiny left-wing lunatics that do exist. You certainly won’t find a major political figure on the left ENDORSING eco-terrorism.
But we just watched a potential Republican candidate for president waste the country’s time by seriously questioning whether or not Barack Obama is a citizen. This is a question that was definitively settled back in 2008. This is a question that should properly be answered with “Shut the fuck up, you crazy motherfucker!”, not more air time on CNN. With the Republican Party, the crazy stupid shit isn’t banished to the fringes. It’s part of the mainstream. It defines the mainstream. Because, of course, it distracts the idiots from noticing they’re getting fucked up the ass.
Because BOTH parties AREN’T fucking insane. That’s another false equivalence you’re trying to create to hide the fact that the Republican Party has become a toxic sewer. The Democrats, despite the corrupting influence of big money, are at least trying to figure out how to govern the country. The Republicans are running in circles babbling and drooling.
Don’t you have a bottom side, dark and cold and with people hanging on by their fingernails. That is where the Repubs want to put the poor , the old , the sick and the minorities.
So who are people who “hate all religious people” if not atheists? Non-religious deists? Whoever these people are, the OP says that they are “as bad as” people who act act to take aways rights of gays, right? Maybe you need to define “as bad as”. Does that mean that people who take away rights are as annoying to you as people who ‘hate all religious people’? The thing is, these people who ‘hate all religious people’ are not only rare (Who are they, anyway? Other than Der Trihs?), but they don’t do anything to these religious people. So why are they ‘just as bad’? The only ones who would be ‘just as bad’ are communists, thus the communist joke. Otherwise, you’re dealing with false equivalences as I mentioned in my post and The Hamster King was kind enough to explain it to you instead of being a sarcastic jerk like me. Yet, it’s not getting through.
Bah! I’m too lazy to bother so you don’t have to respond to this post.
Typical self centered American imperialism, expecting everything in the world conform to your culture. You can’t expect Chinese television to show American idol and you can’t expect an Asian market to take American Express. You have to pay with Asian currency like pokemon or robots (I’m really not sure how that works) if you want to do business in Asian markets. How can you expect otherwise, you U.S. centered jackass?
