Man, that would be really embarassing getting your ass kicked by a deer. How would you explain all the cuts and bruises? “So there I was, walking home minding my own business, when all of a sudden…”

No, deer are right way more often than uber-paranoid moms.

**Magiver** : The problem is, probably both the deer and the dog are in their own neighborhoods. Or someone paved over the deer’s old neighborhood and the deer is trying to find a new place.

Believe it or not, that occurred to me, which is why when I saw deer rough housing, I quietly went the other way. 🙂

That neighborhood looks pretty established, though. Do suburban streets with picket fences and the like just spring up that fast?

Deer have been living in cities since… I dunno - it became illegal to just shoot them? They’re like big rabbits, and most likely never left the area when humans moved in.

Yup. I live in a suburb of Chicago and I have seen in my own backyard, or right across the street, coyotes, foxes, a raccoon, opossums, and small hawks of some kind. I’ve also smelled skunks in the area but not seen them. That’s not even counting the omnipresent rabbits, rodents of various kinds (squirrels/chipmunks/ground squirrels/mice), and many kinds of birds. My sister-in-law lives in the same suburb, with a little bit more woods around her, and last Christmas we watched a group of (IIRC) 7 deer walk through her and her neighbors’ backyards.

That doe didn’t alarm at all the people standing around filming. She freaked out when a classic predator type made her fawn scared. People have to watch out for their pets. I feel bad for the dog, who probably didn’t intend harm (but one never knows what instincts may come out in a pet\*), but the deer had her fawn with her and reacted in defense.

- Growing up, I had a wire-haired fox terrier who is considered a small-size dog. She was so prey-driven that she would go into a barking frenzy even seeing horses - whether they were being ridden down the side of the road past our house, or on TV, or on the big screen at the drive-in movie theater if we’d take her (we learned to check the listing to see if there were any Westerns). I have absolutely no doubt that this little dog would have tried to attack a deer or fawn if given a chance, and it would have been our fault if we had let her anywhere near one.

But shouldn’t they have gotten the memo by now that it’s not her neighborhood anymore?

They thought you were going to litter and were about to kick your ass. They really expect the worst of people, they’re so judgmental.

I live in a city subdivision that is located between two small patches of woods about a half mile part.We often see dear pass from one “woodland” to another especially in winter. Last February we had fourteen! in our back yard at one time, it was quite a sight. I really don’t know how they survive being the woods are only a few dozen or so acres each.

The dog went down like a bitch. I like how the cat just slapped the deer right in the face even after watching the dog go down in flames 🆒

Seriously though glad the dog is okay.

Haven’t the humans got the memo that the deer aren’t moving on, so they’ll just have to go back to where they came from, yet?

I mean, how many dogs & cats do the deer have to beat up for the intruders to realise that they’re not welcome? 😉

Fair enough. I guess my attitude (wrong and human-centric as it is) is that deer are awesome to look at when they’re all majestic and Bambi-esque in the mist and it’s all very cute and nature-y. But when they start pounding on us then I’m all, “Yeah, it’s time to take the deer away.”

Yeah sorry, I couldn’t resist playing devil’s (or deer’s) advocate - I apologise if I was a little snarky!

In other news, doubts have been cast over the fawn’s paternity after a shocking video has surfaced - look who the doe was making out with 9 months ago…

Ha! I like to think that the reason the cat slapped the deer now was that he was all, “Damn, woman, you hardly let me see my kid and when you do you gotta lay the smackdown on my poker buddy? Why you so stupid?”
