For the record, I would like to state that I am not completely ignorant; however, I just read a Wiki article about Queen Elizabeth II (commonly known as Queen of England)… it turns out she is also, separately but _at the same time_: Queen _of Canada_ Queen of _New Zealand_ Queen of _Australia_ Queen of _Belize_ Queen of _Jamaica_ …and queen of a dozen other island nations! :eek: I will now proceed to spend the rest of the day muttering to myself, “holy shit…” ---

Yup, ever since the Statute of Westminster in the 1930s, the monarch has been the monarch of each of the Commonwealth Realms separately. We’re all independent countries, the only commonality being the same person as head of state. One thing she’s not, though, is Queen of England. There hasn’t been a Queen of England since 1707, when the crowns of England and Scotland (which had been separate crowns, though worn by the same person since James VI of Scotland became James I of England in 1603) were fused into a common Kingdom of Great Britain. In the Commonwealth Realms besides the UK, the Queen is represented by a Governor General, who fulfils all the functions of the Queen in that country. (The Commonwealth Realms are the countries of which Elizabeth is Queen. Not all the countries in the Commonwealth are Commonwealth Realms, though – many are republics, such as India or Nigeria. However, Elizabeth is ceremonially Head of the Commonwealth.) ---

And here I thought this was a thread about Elton John. I have to admit I am surprised to learn she is not the Queen of England? Seriously? I mean, I thought that was a given. Wow, I guess I need to take Royalty 101 to get up to speed. ---
