Home hair color

That’s exactly what I want. My “real” hair color is brown. I think. I haven’t seen it for nigh on 20 years. I think when I go grey I’ll dye it blue, like Quentin Crisp.

I’ve had a problem with hair dye because the “burgundy” starts out that way and goes all orange in a month or so.

And yes, I’ve tryed henna (why do I feel like I’m admiting to trying pot?). I’d almost forgot about it. It was the first thing I tried in Jr. High. Before I went on to multicored, bleach blond, black. Apparently henna is a gateway dye.

Henna was the alternative dye for me, as I’d tried dyeing my hair with the synthetic stuff and resulted in broken hair and not quite what I wanted. Apparently I just have sensitive hair.

And this is why I’ve stuck with my brand and my color for so long. The last time I dyed my hair was a year ago, and even when the colored hair grew out, it still fit with the undyed hair. The top of my head was black, but the bottom area was like a reddish, dark brown. My boyfriend was trying to convince me not to dye my hair since he liked the effect that the dyed hair/new hair had. But once I dyed my hair he remembered why I try to dye my hair two or three times a year. Brilliant color, I gotta tell you. Now he’s happy staring at my hair and is telling me that I was right to dye it again.

Loreal Natural Choice works well.

I tried the henna and it did absolutely nothing for my hair. You couldn’t even see there was a change. My hair these days is very dark, almost black, but not black. I wanted it back to the color of my younger days, which was a dark glorious auburn.

I will try to dig up the color I use - it’s time to retouch anyway - and come back to the thread. But I love dying it and it really looks nice - gorgeous coloring.

This is good information, as I’ve been considering doing mine for the first time. But I’m a blonde who wants to keep the same color I currently have (sans grays!)

How do you match the color you have with the color on the box?

And, if you’re wrong, how soon can you re-dye it to a color that’s closer to the one you want?

I’ve heard there’s no such thing as a semi-permanent for the lighter colors. Am I way off?

Why not go to a salon for you first dye job.

Changing your hair color might also mean changing your make up and clothing colors. When I went lighter, I had to dramatically change my makeup. I had been home dyeing my grays with my natural color, soft black, and stripping years of that off my hair took lots of time and money but lightening my hair also took years off my appearance.
Black is a hard color to wear.

Huh; I thought “true brunette” meant black.

If that’s the case, the OP should be advised that it’s more difficult to go darker than lighter. Many years ago, I dyed my hair black, and it just didn’t work. First, I missed a spot, and it was very noticeable. It was also too low to pretend I’d meant to put in a streak. Then, one day I saw myself reflected in a car window in broad daylight, and the red was shining right through the black. Realized I wasn’t fooling anyone, and had it professionally dyed, then went back to L’Oreal.

Incidentally, I go to a beauty supply store, where I pay a great deal less for the colorant and whatever that white goop is, than I would for a kit with a bottle, conditioner and gloves. I have all those things at home, so why pay more for new ones every time?

I’ve been coloring my hair for 28 years. I’m only 40. ( Thanks to my mom and her mad desire to give highlights to everyone she knows 30 years ago. None of them turned out well.)

I’ve tried just about every hair color product out there ( except Henna or any natural hair dyesas I can’t find them locally and would love to give them a go.) and my hands down favorite is L’Oreal Feria ( #63) . I have received more compliments on this color than any thing else over the years. Followed by Natural Instincts and Garnier for a semi-permanent change.
I just wish the semi-permanent hair colors would have a permanent hair color option available. I really liked Spiced Tea and Tweed by Natural Instincts, but don’t want to re-dye my hair that often.

My only advice that I haven’t seen mentioned, everything else has been covered, is to not wash your hair so often to keep the color truer and avoid hot water when washing. Hot makes the color fade quicker. As a ‘red’ head, I wash my hair about once a week ( I rinse it daily.) and in cold water and the color stays around longer.
My other mad desire from the hair color companies is not so much goo for your hair if someone has micro short hair like me, which is about 1 inch or shorter all around.

Slightly Off Topic, but related:
Can anyone tell me what kind of hair dye This woman uses. ( She is a famous knitwear designer and I just love her colors.) I’ve never seen stuff like this. I live under a rock.

As I only lighten the top layer of my hair, I don’t need the whole amount of dye in the package either. So I use about one third each time. I measure one third of both components and mix them in a used and rinsed applybottle.
Works fine for me, as hair dye isn’t cheap and it can’t be environmentally sound to throw most of that stuff unused down the drain.
