Wow. An armed homeowner saw off 5 attackers, [killing three and wounding two](https://www.foxnews.com/us/texas-homeowner-shoots-kills-3-men-and-injures-2-during-home-invasion-officials-say). That’s some good shooting. ---

Sounds like the homeowner was ready for just such an attack. To accurately shoot 5 people requires alot of skill. ---

The article says that the homeowner fired “dozens of shots”. That doesn’t suggest a great deal of skill. ---

I associate “saw off” with some sort of friendly parting of ways. “fought off”, "fended off " but that wording sounds like he kissed them goodbye as well as shot them dead. ---

I’ve read “saw off” in describing the results of sports contests as well. For example, something like ‘the Patriots saw off the Chiefs’. Nothing particularly friendly about that. ---
