Honeymoons: where'dja go and so on

We got married in January 2000, and went to Sourthern Vermont. We stayed at The Battenkill Inn in Manchester, and then went to Grafton and stayed at The Old Tavern. We had a fabulous time. We wanted to learn to cross-country ski, but they had one of the coldest Januarys in recent memory and there wasn’t much snow. We went hiking, played tennis (indoors), ate really good food, spent hours in front of the fire, and had a great time.

The day we were scheduled to leave, there was a blizzard. We tried to go home anyway, got about a mile away from the Old Tavern, and turned around and went back. (We nearly had an accident.) They let us stay the night at a reduced rate and we had the best day of our trip. Enough snow fell so that we could go snowshoeing, which was great fun. It was an excellent trip.

Where and when did you go on your honeymoon?

DanielWithrow and I will be spending our honeymoon in Norway and Denmark the first two weeks of June.

Any particular reason you chose to go there (culture, climate, close to/far from home, etc.?

Neither of us has ever been to Scandinavia, but from everything we’ve heard it’s gorgeous and has a great mix of cultural and outdoorsy stuff. It was a toss-up between Scandinavia and Ireland, but since I’ve already been to Ireland, we decided to go somewhere new to both of us.

What OTHER things did you do on honeymoon, when you finally left the room (skiing, etc.)?

We plan to do some camping and hiking, and we’ll probably visit some museums and such. And per the instructions of our fellow Dopers, we’re both planning to eat lots and lots of pastries.

Can’t answer the other questions yet.

We were married in early December. We went on a Jamaica honeymoon, spending four days at one resort and then taking the resort’s plane to another property. These were the “Superclubs” resorts that are all-inclusive.

We wanted to go somewhere warm (we live in Michigan!) and we chose something all-inclusive so we wouldn’t have to worry about anything except figuring out which fun things to do each day. We did the two-resort plan because we thought we’d get bored with one place and this way we could see a little more of Jamaica.

There were no kids (they have kid-friendly resorts where families go, these weren’t them).

The Good: it was lovely, especially the Sans Souci in Ocho Rios. We like this resort a thousand times better than the resort in Negril where we spent the latter four days. Ocho Rios is hilly and has gorgeous cliffs and lush vegetation everywhere. Negril is flat, and just didn’t seem as dramatic or exotic. Also, the resort didn’t seem very luxurious there. The food was good both places, and the clientele was international, which made it interesting. The beaches were gorgeous. The flight in the four-seater plane, along the coast of Jamaica? WONDERFUL.

The Bad: I got sick with a horrible cold so I did not get my money’s worth. Aargh. And I hate being sick in a foreign country. It’s harder to nest and comofort myself. I felt kind of trapped. The last day of our vacation, a tropical depression came through and we couldn’t do anything on the water. That was a drag.

I don’t think I’d go back. It was a been there, done that. Some of the other places described in this thread sound better to me.

Marriage #1

Went to Anguilla. Would go again in a heartbeat. Beautiful little and largely undeveloped island. Did nothing but lay in the sand, listen to the waves, and eat and drink.

Coming up Marriage #2

Going to Jost Van Dyke in the BVIs. Even smaller. Can’t wait. Lay in the sand, naked to the sun, eat, drink, sleep, make love. I may never come back.
