Maybe the girls were involved in a minor accident that left no visible damage on the bumper but was sufficient to deploy the airbag, and concocted that story rather than tell the truth to the driver’s parents? While it does seem unlikely that any impact light enough to leave no visible damage would deploy the airbag, it is perhaps more plausible than the “girl hits the bumper” story.

This is what I was implying above. Yes, I think they concocted a story to explain away the airbag. It just can’t happen the way they say without an electrical fault of some sort.
On the other hand, when I recently installed a new car stereo there were warnings about avoiding the airbag control wires. They are installed behind the dash and are generally colored bright yellow. Messing with one of these wires could cause the airbag to go off is what the warning said. I’m not sure that’s true, because the battery was disconnected so the sensors should have been off too, but I can see why they tell people to stay away from them. A friend of mine was injured pretty badly when an airbag went off improperly in a low speed accident. Of course at least one, probably two friends have been saved by airbags, so on the whole they’re doing well.
