Cleverly and wittily written, it features Kyle McLaughlin as a very weird FBI agent from the Pacific Northwest three years before he played a very weird FBI agent in the Pacific Northwest on Twin Peaks. I like to think that this film explains how he got that way…

Funny, but I wouldn’t draw a connection between TH and TP because at the end of TH,

the FBI agent’s body is killed, and he transfers his good-guy alien consciousness to the LA cop. Agent Dale Cooper, odd as he is, could not be the alien-possessed agent from TH.

Got a few good ones for you that aren’t mainstream, but pretty great:

• The Descent (underground, cave humanoids)
• The Burrowers (spidery creatures from the ground that kill settlers in the old west)
• Grabbers (tentacle monsters terrorizing an oceanside Irish town)

Deep Rising - sort of like ‘Tremors’ on a cruise ship.

Attack the Block - animal-like aliens invade a London neighborhood. Stars John Boyega (‘Finn’ in the current Star Wars movies) and Jodie Whittaker (the next Doctor on Doctor Who).

What I loved so much about Aliens is, well, many things. But some of the main ones were :

a. The main monsters are concrete, tangible things. Bursts of gunfire work. They are dangerous but they don’t get to ‘cheat’ like, say, the monster from ‘the grudge’, which is intangible, can teleport, and appears to obey no rules whatsoever.

b. The aliens can be dealt with. You just need to not get facehugged (and if you do, don’t keep it a secret), bring plenty of ammo, rescue any survivors, and then nuke em from orbit. Also, make sure to check for stowaways before you put your pulse rifles away.

Anyways, they were great.

Until I saw Pacific Rim, Aliens was my favourite movie for decades. There is just so much right about it!

One actual horror movie I didn’t see mentioned here is Stephen King’s The Mist. I feel it fits both of SamuelA’s criteria without cheating. It’s a good movie to watch, so I don’t want to spoil any of it by saying any more than that.

I think of Aliens as an action movie rather than horror, although Alien is more horror than action. The characters in the original movie discovered that the xenomorph could bleed (although you wouldn’t want it to), but they were woefully understocked on weapons. The Colonial Marines had weaponry ranging from pulse rifles to ummm … nukes.

Also: an independently-targeting particle beam phalanx (you could fry half a city with that puppy!), tactical smart-missiles, phased-plasma pulse rifles, RPG’s, nukes, knives, sharp sticks, and sonic electronic ball-breakers!

On the opposite end you have the kaiju genre; Godzilla and his successors. These monsters are individually powerful and hard to kill. But they are vulnerable to normal attacks if enough firepower is gathered together.

The problem with the Jaeger program isn’t the lack of firepower - it’s the mediocre pilots.

Are we counting Tremors as horror?

It’s horror with a comedic element, as are Killer Klowns, Zombieland, Arachnophobia, and TerrorVision.

The monster in TerrorVision could have been dealt with if the protagonists weren’t so incompetent.
