This list isn’t complete without The Scariest Story In The World. 
I’d recommend William Sleator as a starting point. They’re young YA, creepy as all getout but not too horrifying or really gory like King. Several of them are kind of SF-y. And better written than Stein! My favorite is The Green Futures of Tycho.
