It’s been a while since I’ve ridden horses but that was my first thought - either those are some small horses or Moore’s a giant. He looks like he was able to get the horse to gallop for a short burst, but anyone can do that if they’re holding on tight and ready for it. What I’d like to see is how he’d handle being in the ring with another horse biting his horse in the ass. I had that happen once and damn near scared the shit out of me because my horse took off and I could barely hang on.

I know a guy whose posture is usually pretty bad (my grandmother would have a few Things to say, and she was the kind of lady who could pronounce the capital T), but when he’s on a horse it’s a lot better. Soooo… good posture would actually be one of the first things a rider needs to learn?

I’m no expert but even to my eyes it is clear that he rides like an angry, racist, sexually abusing loser.

When you see an experienced sensitive rider it doesn’t even register that they are “horse and rider” because everything happens as one. Moore looked he was trying to fight or fuck the poor creature. No wonder it looked scared.

> In the linked video, the horse appears nervous with all of the asshole press photographers crowding around and snapping pictures. Might have been a new experience for the horse? Yesterday, several news media outlets showed videos taken earlier where people were repeatedly warning the ignorant press people to back away from the horse. I half expected at least one photog to receive a kick to their body, or head.
>
> I wonder how a horse person would compare Moore’s horse handling when he was arriving at the polling station with a calm horse, vs Moore’s horse handling when he was trying to ride a nervous horse thru the clicking, crowding, media-types?

I’ve ridden a nervous horse under spooky conditions. The idea is to use as light a hand as possible, concentrating instead on reassuring the animal.

If a visitor were to behave like Moore on one of our horses, (s)he would be told to dismount and offered a more suitable activity. Maybe take them to the mall or something.

Leaning back and pulling on the reins is a way to keep the horse from getting her head between her legs so she doesn’t buck explosively. See video of [someone riding out a runaway horse.](https://www.facebook.com/AtTheRaces/videos/10155473667025379/)

> That video was a thing of beauty. I noticed he never pulled back on the reins. Was the horse taking verbal cues? Amazing. I so admire all you Horse people.
>
> The link posted by **Spidey**.

I am not much of a rider, but I once had the pleasure of riding a trained polo pony. I think the horse was showing off for me. That horse went where-ever I was looking. Like, if I looked to the left, the horse turned left. I held the reins loosely, but I barely had to use them, because the horse was so sensitive to my posture. If I leaned forward and tightened my knees, she went faster, if I sat up a bit and relaxed, she slowed. So, probably not verbal cues, probably just paying attention to how Shatner was sitting.

The first thing I noticed in the still photos of Moore on the horse was that he wasn’t actually mounted on the animal, he was just sort of plopped in the saddle with his legs akimbo. I agree with others that watching the video was painful. I don’t know enough to comment on what sort of bit was used or any of those details, but yanking both ways on the reins like that must have confused the heck out of the horse, and looked painful. Yes, a woman with a grand total of maybe 15-20 hours on horseback could see he was botching it.

And that jockey still had quieter hands than Moore!

If Sassy had wanted to buck him off Moore wouldn’t have had a chance of staying on. She wouldn’t have had to get her head down, just a bounce of her butt and he would have been off because his balance was so crap.

Based on the comments in this thread, I’m sort of assuming that after 5 minutes to get the stirrups at the right height and an explanation of the pommel, you’ll be miles ahead.

I’ve seen some complete beginners do better from the first moment they sat on a horse.

Basically, it’s like he’s never been on a horse before.

He certainly acts like many hypocrite self-proclaimed Christians I’ve known that read [Genesis 1:28](http://biblehub.com/genesis/1-28.htm) to justify any kind of abuse of nature. Picture Eric Cartman yelling “YOU WILL RESPECT MAH AUTHORITAH” at that poor darling beast.

Not every horse can qualify to be an urban police horse. It’s my limited experience that horses, dogs, and children have different personalities. It’s unfair, and wrong, to assume that a horse, is a horse, is a horse.

It’s my position that this particular horse, in this particular situation, looked uncomfortable and possibly distressed. I was hoping that a knowledgeable/experienced horse person could address this possibility.

>

I believe it may have been the other way around. The Moores tied up their horses, and then left to vote. The asshole photographers, who weren’t tied up, then crowded around the horses knowing that the Moores would return for their horses.
